High readings

Hi
I have Type II diabetes and have had high readings for about 6 months. I am on insulin, was on Insuman and it has just been changed to Lantus. I take 38 units in the morning and 48 units at night. I also take 1000mg of Metformin a day. My sugars are really running high. Fasting this morning was 13.1 and I've just done it now again, and it's 22.9. All I had for lunch was a small portion of pasta with a tomato and herb sauce. I also have a blood disorder that requires me to eat at least 300g of carbs a day. I don't know if any one else has had this type of problem. I'd really like to know. These high sugars are not making me feel very well at the moment and I can't seem to get them down.

I cannot help you with the insulin but wonder if you need to see your DSN for a dose adjustment if they are that high. You do not say how long they have been that high or when you were changed to the new drugs.

It is a shame that you have to eat that high a level of carbs. Possibly add some fat to the pasta to try and slow its digestion down a little. Do you eat low GI forms of Carbs?

When my numbers were going high I would do some moderate exercise like go for a walk or put a film on and sit on my bike pedalling. If you can do exercise you may fine it helps.

Ah, Andrew, thank you anyway. My insulin has just changed on Wednesday ( I saw the dr who specialises in diabetes at my surgery) from Insuman Basal to Lantus and the dose has just gone up by 4 units morning and evening. My sugars have been high for a long time, at least six months...I fell through the cracks at our dr rooms and they forgot to refer me after my last HbA1C which was high again. I have changed my diet a lot over the past years since diagnosis, and try to eat wholewheat pasta when possible. I have also tried lowering the carbs to the absolute minimum despite the blood disorder I have. It's a juggling act! I was going to go for a walk, but my sugar is so high now I am feeling rather shaky. I usually do more exercise than in the last week, because I walk to work but it's school holidays so I haven't had that every day, although I have still be active because that does help. I had really good control until about 7 months ago when it all went pear-shaped! So I thought I'd ask on here is anyone else has had similar problems when changing insulin. Because my sugars were high before I changed, but they are even higher now!

So is there anything significant that happened at your 7 month mark to change your levels towards being raised?

If all your levels are coming in raised then it does look like your basal insulin needs to be raised until it starts to come down lower. If you are high 2-3 hours after food then you need to increase your bolus.....

I can remember my consultant for my stomach asking me what changed in my diet to affect my stomach... Is there something whether it be stress. Change of job, etc that has kicked off these higher levels? It may well be medical, but best to rule out life circumstances...

If you have significantly raised the carbs you are eating, this would through your basal rates out... You can increase carbs and give more bolus because its done on a ratio.... Howveele, your basal and bolus will also be on a ratio and if this has been thrown iff kilter it can account for raised bgs, but easily remedied...
