Type of diabetes
Carer
hello everyone,

im a carer for a type 2 diabetic who is bed bound as a result of sepsis a DVT and a leg ulcer, up to ten days ago his blood sugars were well controlled then for no reason they have just kept going up and up on waking its 14.7, tonight i have checked again 4 hours after him eating a small pizza and salad he is 22.9 any advice please? we have been waiting to have his medication changed from metformin as he is unable to take it anymore, its been 6 months of him not taking any medication and our appointment to see a diabetic doctor isnt till next month, im getting no help or advice from his doctors and now i dont know what to do and by the way he is a 63 year old gentleman, any help will be appreciated thank you.

If the only control over blood glucose levels is diet, pizza is not a good choice - dense carb foods such as bread, potatoes, rice etc. become glucose in the blood stream - usually quite quickly. It is not uncommon for doctors and nurses to be unhelpful when faced with diabetes.
Swapping pizza for a tin of tuna, boiled eggs and cheese, even a couple of sausages will reduce the carbs and hopefully lower readiings

Hi. He needs more urgent help than to wait a month to see the diabetic Dr. He almost certainly needs the medication change as Metformin won't be adequate to improve sugars at that level. Whilst waiting for an appointment, do keep his carbs right down and avoid things like a pizza. Is the person overweight? Note that infections will usually cause raised blood sugar which needs the right diabetes medication. If necessary you may need to go to A&E or call 111.

Welcome to the forum, hopefully you will read some ideas to help caring for this gentleman. If you Google Sepsis and Blood Glucose you will see that there is a very definite connection, one article suggests that high BG is an early sign of sepsis. I assume that antibiotics have been administered for the sepsis.

If he's not been taking medication for his diabetes and his BG were well controlled, you've been doing well. As already mentioned, lowering carb intake will help a lot. Everyone has different experiences, I stopped eating bread, potato, rice and pasta and threw away 3 prescribed drugs and avoided going onto insulin. It might not be for everyone, but a no brainer for me because of the side effects of the drugs I was taking.

I'd like to add one thing about leg ulcers, if he can get to a Multiple Sclerosis centre with Hydrobaric Oxygen Therapy equipment, it's well worth looking into. The NHS pay for MS sufferers and might consider a leg ulcer sufferer. I've heard of people being readied for amputation being helped just by receiving HbOT, avoiding surgery.

All the best.
