high sugars no ketons...

Hi I've been in my 20's since 2 this after noon took correction after correction and I'm now suffering a belly ache with 1.4 ketones but showing in the highest colour on urine stick :( feeling a bit sickly too I'm on the omnipod pump it's another unexplained high again as I've ran perfect since the last time I ran high all afternoon what should I do??

You would be best to seek medical advice from either 111 or go to A&E as with keytones and stomach aches you could be getting worse. If correction doses aren't working, get help.

Regards
Angie

Change the omnipod...drink plenty of water. Do corrections manually noylt via the omnipod...

Above 12.0 and I wld be giving myself double corrections too. Get hold of your manufacturers helpline...

You should be able to sort this out at home, a&e know nothing about pumps at all, least of all about omnipods...

As priority give urself corrections by injections immediately.

Change everything with the omnipod.

Drink plenty of water. A glass every 45 mins.

Contact manufacturer helpline. Make notes of batch numbers etc to tell them..

You should not have odd high's like this. If on a pump, best thing if going above 12.0 is to change everything.... Unless you've had a chinese or curry or fish n chips... As these can throw you really high 5 hours later, and you need to learn how to give extended or multi wave bolus's for these foods.

After changing omnipod.. And levels coming down by manual injections you will need to look more indepth as to whether the omnipod is the cause and why... Or if you have an illness, or wrong foods etc..

Always assume if over 12.0 its the pump and go manual corrections and change cannulas, bateries etc.

Let us know how you get on....

Hi Sarah,
Have you managed to get your bg under control yet?
I agree with what DD was saying however if you start being sick, you said you were getting a sore tummy, then it's definitely a trip to a&e as this is you going into dka. You need to have some fluids and an insulin drip to get your bg under control. If it was a sore tummy in just a tummy bug or something that you've felt coming for a while that's different, but if it's vomiting and diahorrea from being high and having ketones, its best you get some help.
Hope you're feeling better.

Hi thanks for your advice but I tried everything and did end up in hospital and being treated for dka it was awful I was being sick loads and it turned out I had a water infection, I followed sick day rules too but nothing would help:( I'm on the mend now x

Out ofi interest.. How did a&e deal with your omnipod?

Hi Sarah,
Hope you're feeling better now are you out of hospital or have they kept you in until the water infection is cleared up? I know you said you were only 12 but I've had DKA at 8 and 9 you don't nesscecarily need to be really high.
The sick day rules i follow don't really depend on how high i am just how I'm feeling. I quite happy to be running up to 11 when I'm not feeling well as some times I get it when my fever may break for an hour or two I end up going low As I'm running a temp basal anywhere from 130-200%. So I usually try to aim for 7 as my target instead of 5.5 my usual and only do correction boluses when above 11. If I'm above 11and the correcton isn't having any effect then I correct via pen and change over my set just incase. If it's a new one in and I know it was working like 3 hours ago without any problems then I increase my basal and do another bolus. I make sure I use my IOB fuction so I'm not stacking too much. If I still can't get It to go down it's been 4 or 5 hours I have keytones and now I feel like I may be sick, even if I'm only 14 or 15 It's time to go to hospital. If you're being sick you can't keep any fluids down get yourself to a&e as quickly as you can, the sooner you are getting fluids and insulin via your vein the better you will feel.
I'm just comming through a bad batch of tonsillitis throat has reduced in size now it's just like a bad cold sitting on a temp basal rate of 160%, last night went up to 18.3 feeling completely rotten but I was 7.9 when I got up, and am now at uni. wish i was snuggled in bed with my 2 beagles watching day time telly. I've already had over a week of that so back to work today. Meh!!
Hope you're feeling better.

A&E were great your wrong about them not knowing about the omnipod as they called the diabetic consultant straight away and I was told to suspend the omnipod as I needed to go straight onto slide and scale they new the right protocol!

Hi pumppimp yeah I'm out now thank god still feeling rough! I'm doing a lot better though, you are so right about going to a&e once being sick etc I'm so glad I went as they said I was very close to going to ITU. I'm still getting use to this omnipod as I've not had it long. Aww hope your ok must be nasty getting that x

Glad you're feeling better. Good job as well that the a&e team were on the ball, I've had a few ocasions where I've not been so lucky however I know enough myself to tell them what needs done and where exactly my veins and arteries are when I'm dehydrated, I'm great for junior doctors to practise on apparently as I can talk them through it and I don't flinch or so they've told me anyways. Merry christmas
