Highs in the morning

Just a quick question... My readings have been a steady 6 in the morning for the past couple of months however for the past week or so, they've been between 9-10!

Should I wait and see if it evens out again or start upping my basal by a couple of units until it comes down?

I'm trying to conceive at the moment and don't want all these high morning readings to affect my HBa1c

:( I have had this happen lately too, but I have found I have been having hypo's at night. If I don't treat the hypo and sleep through my liver dumps glucose and I wake up a lot higher than my usual. That's one consideration. Then, as you say you may need to increase your basal as well. Although on saying that, how are your BGL's during the day normally?

Someone else referred to this link for testing basal rates too which might help.

Ahhh that could very much be the case as I always go to bed within range (on the lower scale early 4's) and last night was 3.1, dealt with the hypo and woke up as 9.7!!

My BGL are pretty much perfect throughout the day but I do tend to have quite a few hypos during the night!

How do I rectify this then? Decrease my basal?

Yes, that is probably it then... and yes decease your basal dosage. I have to do that myself at the moment. I decease by 2 units every few days (as advised by my endo) until I get the desired fasting BGL's I want. I think monitor the day BGL's to make sure it is right.

Hi Ellie, as you are planning on conceiving I suggest you call your DSN to discuss this, you may benefit from changing your background insulin to degludec/tresiba which is more stable and can reduce night time hypos, however your readings could also point to the fact you had a hypo during the night. You may want to try waking at 3am to test to see what your levels are like during the night for a few nights to build a picture ;)

Yes decrease your basal dose, your morning highs could be a result of you over-treating your hypo's through the night.
