Hello Everyone,

I would like to share with you my personal life events and experience regarding diabetes.

I was born in a family which has a long history of diabetes. I have 5 uncles who are currently diabetics (type 1) including my father. I have 4 other uncles who are type 2. My dad's mother (my grandma) was also diabetic. It is thought that this is the main reason why all my uncles have ended up being diabetics. They all blame the genes!! I forgot to add that my mum's dad was also diabetic. Now, let’s shift onto me;

I was diagnosed with Diabetes Type 2 last year back in July 2010. I was 28 yrs old then and weighed 89kg! I am 171 cm and as per my BMI, I was considered to be obese at that time. I was doing little exercise and was eating a lot of take aways. My 12 hours fasting Glucose test in July was 10.1!!My BP was 138/89.I was shocked to say the least!

Upon seeing my GP, I was referred straight away for a blood test. My results came back and my HbA1c was 7.7! My GP and I had a chat in order to discuss the treatment options. I begged not to be put on any meds and to allow me to rectify things via 'Diet' and 'exercise only'. He advised me to follow a low carb diet despite the contradicting NHS viewpoints on 'low carbing'. He has his own strong opinions about many health issues. He also advised me to buy a book to educate myself more on 'Low GI/GL' food. He gave me a 3 months period in order to get healthy and to prove that I have what it takes to manage my illness without meds.

In Oct 2010, he sent me for another blood test. This time around, my HbA1c was 6.0! I was stunned to say the least and he was equally impressed with my improved results. I was extremely happy as I got the evidence that I was on the right path. I carried on with what I was doing. By Oct, I weighed 80kg and lost 10kg already. My BP was 125/82

And now, I had another test this month and my HbA1c is 5.4!!!I am extremely pleased and proud of myself as I initially thought that it would take me at least 2 years to get this kind of result! I currently weigh 70kg. My BP is 122/81. My LDL cholesterol is 2.5!My triglycerides level is also v.low.

I’ve been brisk walking (Average 6 times per week) for about 30 minutes every day ever since I was diagnosed with Diabetes. I also go on a light jog of 25 minutes twice a week now that the weather has improved.

Feel free to ask me anything!

Best Regards

Raj

Hi Raj and welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your latest Ac1, you obviously have a switched on GP, not many of those about but perhaps things are changing, I had similar good advice but mine came from the specialist diabetic unit attached to my local hospital and from this forum.

Many newly diagnosed diabetics are less fortunate though and are still given the old 'eat a healthy diet' advice with no instruction on what that might be or worse still advised to eat plenty of starchy carbs

Thanks Sid!

Yes, I am fortunate to have this GP. He is a class apart!

I think the results speak for themselves!NHS should indeed open their eyes!Though,I am not religiously strict with the carbs and I do eat them but only cautiously and in moderate amount!

Thanks Jo! Yes, I know what you mean. I guess some people aren’t motivated enough or they simply lack the willpower.

Thanks Roxy! Well, I wouldn’t say that I am super strict. I just tend to avoid ‘Sugar’ on a daily basis. My typical daily diet is as follow:

Breakfast (9AM): 300 ml of low fat milk + 2 Weetabix biscuits or 6 full heaped spoonful of High fibre bran
Snack (11.30AM): 1 pear
Lunch (1pm): 2 slice of Weightwatchers wholemeal sandwich bread + 4 lean slices of ham +plenty of lettuce
Snack (2pm): 1 apple
Snack (3pm): 1 orange+1 kiwi
Snack (4pm): 1 small pot of fruit yoghurt (Weightwatchers)
Snack (5.30pm): 1 tangerine/banana
Snack (6.30pm): 1 cup of tea + 1 small single biscuit
Dinner (7-7.30pm): grilled chicken leg (skin removed)/salmon + boiled broccoli and cauliflower + Bisto Gravy
Snack (9pm): 1 cup of tea/coffee/green tea + half slice of grapefruit

I also drink plenty of water throughout the day. I would say that on a daily basis, I drink about 4.5-5 Ltd per day.

Yes, Indeed I do have my occasional treats about every 7-8 days. I do enjoy my pizza, Chinese, Curry, cream cakes, ice cream etc just like anybody else. I make sure though that I do have second helping despite having a big appetite! I eat adequately to be full but I do not stuff myself just because I am having my treat.

Please do get back to me should you want to know more about my diet

No probs Roxy.

Sorry I meant to say 'NO' second helping despite having a big appetite. Yes, if you are going to have carbs, its best to have it in the morning or midday as opposed to dinner time. Its just because at night,we are pretty much innactive and hence this has a bad effect on our blood sugar levels. If you notice,I have most of my carbs in the morning. I then brisk walk 20 minutes to work as a way of exercising and also as a way to bring down my sugar levels.

Thanks

Raj

Are you sure your having most of your carbs in the morning Raj, with that amount of carby snacks I'm amazed your bg levels come down at all in the afternoon. If I topped myself up with a piece of fruit every hour I dont see how I could get below double figures before my diner.

Still if it works for you :D

people that make me panic. Racism - in fact most 'isms'
I'm with you Sid on this one. I have to add some protein when I eat a piece of fruit to stop my bg going beserk

Cheers
