Hello, this is my first time on here so it's all a bit new, but the situation is....my 14 yr old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 4 months ago. We are dealing with it ok so far but her dad and stepmum are taking her to Tunisia in 2 weeks time, for 2 weeks and I'm basically worried sick! They have only seen her a few times since diagnosis so their knowledge of diabetes is very basic, but my worry is the obvious - heat and risk of illness. They have had some training from the diabetic nurse in what to do in the event of illness etc. but I was just wondering if anyone can offer us some first hand experience please on the effect of BG in high temp ( it's currently about 32 degrees and will get hotter). My daughter hasn't been exposed to heat really since diagnosis so I have no idea how it will affect her. Also any other travel advice would be appreciated. We have the frio bags to keep insulin cool, there is a fridge in the room too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Test more than normal and be prepared to reduce insulin as heat generally makes us more sensitive to it. Take plenty of spare everything. Enjoy hols :-)

Hi it is scary the first time after diagnosed however just be prepared. Like above says take double of everything. Less insulin due to heat. Carry all medication in Hand luggage and test more frequently in the first few days until she's used to the heat. Also may need that ice cream as a treat if swimming and doing activities everyday. My son now 19 diagnosed at 8 has managed fine on all holidays and done school trips abroad and also two lads holidays. It's just making sure everyone around them is aware of the symptoms and more importantly she has a good holiday.

Try alcudia in Majorca, it has one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean and the area around there is mainly natural and unspoiled. my friend has been there twice and he loved the place so i would strongly recommend a stay there.
