I’m off on holiday for a week to Tenerife . I love Canarian beer specifically tropical . I haven’t been there since being diagnosed and haven’t had any beer either . I’m not on meds and my last HbA1c was 42 . Would it be ok to have a few cold ones each day or would it undo all the work I’ve put in so far . I hardly eat any carbs under 30 g a day

Well personally I wouldn't, I have worked too hard these passed few months.

Are you taking your testing kit with you? Try one and test.

Yup I’m taking my kit I think that’s the way to go . I would suppose if it’s under 7 after one it’s not to bad we’ll see . I only drink it in the day so the heat might sweat it out of me quickly

Only 1 way to find out :) make sure you keep an eye on your bgs after AND have a great holiday
How long after beer should you test . After each one or say after 2 or 3 these are 330ml beers

Are you using the mySugr app? You need to enter enough data, it took me 6 days, and it will give you an estimated HbA1c number. I find it highly motivating.

I am off too on Sunday to sunny Corfu. So interested in beer question and when to test. I planned to stick to rum with diet lemonade during day and wine for dinner.

I usually dont count how much I drink, is it any issue considering there are virtually no carbs in rum.

I would test an hour after then again and hour after that. Test that when you are there. I wouldnt go for 3 beers then test as it could raise you bs quite high. Plus it would depend on if you had eaten as well. Just take it easy and keep on testing hourly while having a beer or 2

Hi Peadair
don't want to be a damp squib, but each 330ml beer is about 13g of carbs. 3 beers = 39 grams. :banghead:

As far as undoing all the hard work?
No a couple of weeks out of the year where you ease up on the reigns a bit, as long as you don't go crazy isn't going to undermine the other 50 weeks of the year where you are working hard to keep it under control.

My philosophy:
You can't avoid everything but you can make informed choices ~Michelob Ultra = 2.2g of carbs per 330ml.

Sounds like you might be doing a keto diet with the 30 grams of carbs a day so hope this helps 5 low carb Canadian beers https://simpleketodietplan.com/5-low-carb-beer-for-your-keto-diet-in-canada/ ;)

Like the philosophy but. I Canadian beer where I’m goin I’ll have a look on the can when I get there and see what happens ... I used to do 50 to 100 grs a day and was around 6.6 to 7.0 all the time so if I gave 3 or 4 beers at 13 grs and stick to nice big steaks and peppers n eggs etc should be ok . An interesting and enjoyable experiment coming up . I’ll kerp ye all informed of the results when I get back

Have a great holiday. :)

Remember that alcohol may break your reserve to be good with food choices. Mind those big plates of paella!
Have a great time!

Don’t like Paella ... My thing is Big T bones

Any time I have tested after beer, it hasn't raised me much, or at all. That doesn't mean it isn't carby and somewhat inadvisable, but I think the alcohol may offset the carb content to some degree. Try a little, then test- maybe after 1 hr then again after 2 hrs to see what it does to your levels. If it raises you too much, maybe switch to spirits. Spirits drop my BG levels like a stone, so I would probably have a couple of whiskys first then drink my beer. Your mileage may vary, but if you test cautiously and act accordingly, there should be a way for you to enjoy some of your beer. Good luck with it!

What is needed is some information from a beer drinker with CGM as the response to beer might be too quick or too slow to catch with finger pricking. Any offers?
