Hello! I don't (as far as I know) have diabetes myself but as I am now 50 and we have a few cases of late onset diabetes II in my family I would like start testing my blood sugar level regularly at home to see where it is so I can deal with it at an early stage if need be.

I have searched online for home test kits and am completely confused!! I wondered if any of you kind people could recommend a simple home test kit? I don't mind paying a little extra to have one that is accurate and easy to use but I don't know where to start!

Thanks in advance :)

Like a lot of people on here I use this one. The cost of testing is in the ongoing need for strips, this is one of the cheapest to run. The accuracy seems to be as good as most.

Or Tesco has one for £10 with strips £10 for 50. Works fine.

Testing is a good idea but worth considering when in the day you test. You'll get different results before and after eating and morning compared to evening.

Excellent plan! I wish I'd found this site when I was just pre-diabetes!

Imho, doctors should already prescribe home-testing before the onset of diabetes - aim for prevention!

If you are only testing occasionally it’s worth seeing how long after opening a tub of strips they need to be used by. The SD Code Free is three months, the Tee 2 and the Caresens Dual which I use they are good for 12 months.

Then there is the Accu-Chek Mobile which uses a cartridge of fifty tests instead of individual strips a little expensive and after the use by date the cartridge will become unusable but one advantage is the finger pricker attaches to the meter and also no used test strips littering the place and the used cartridge is easily disposed of..
