So I've recently been Ill with the flu and my sugars was all over the place, went to speak to the GP about my situation and he said he can t do anything about it.the reason i went to the GP is I don t have a appointment till the 7th of december with the specialist.I' now finding it even harder to control my sugars,as high as 15 a few days ago, waking up in the 7s now and am not comfortable with my control at all,I explained this to the GP but felt like he wasn't taking my situation seriously tbh.I wanna control my diabetes as best as possible and I can t do it with no insulin, even low carbing I m finding it hard!!!diabetes nurse's are so hard to get in touch.I ve even switched to lchf diet to try and get my sugars under control but I'm not happy with the weight loss,11 stone now 4 weeks ago 11stone 10 used to work out 2 hours a day but noe have become a little depressed and lazy

That sounds hard @wiserkurtious

Have you tried phoning your specialist's secretary to ask if you can be seen sooner? Explain what problems you're having. If that's not possible, ask for the best number to get a DSN on, or ask to be transferred as they may have an internal number that gets answered quicker.

Basically, push and don't get shoved to one side.

If you are actually diagnosed as T1 you should probably already be on insulin. If you have agreed with the nurse that you honeymooning then you should at least be on Basal insulin even if it's low level. Yes, do ask for an earlier appointment and insist on some level of insulin. I assume you are already on tablets including Gliclazide?

was diagnosed as type 1 due to DKA and a lovely!!!!! overnight stay at the hospital :P I did start on insulin but came off early into diagnosis. Now my pancreas feels like its packing in and needs help!!no tablets

I've had insulin from day 1 I was diagnosed in may my levels are still all over at the min I'm carb counting as well and had different types of long lasting insulin plus I'm on novorapid but it's not so bad get on to the specialist they should help you out mine have been brilliant

I lost 4 stone in 6 weeks befor I was diagnosed

Bernstein's theory is that auto immune attack does not kill all of the beta cells and the remainder are killed off by high glucose. So in essence really tight control, aided by low carb, could preserve some beta cell function.

The OP has been following a VLC diet and through no fault of his own he now potentially needs insulin.

No one here is discussing fat intake or promoting low fat.

We all eat a variety of diets and no one diet suits everyone.

If I were you, at your stage, I would IMMEDIATELY switch to a Bernstein diet....

the 250,000 type 1's in the UK will be really pleased to hear this
perhaps you exaggerate a tiny wee bit.

If you go with the last set of DUK stats, from a year ago, there are 3.5mm PWD of which 10% are PWT1D, so we're about 350k. Or around 0.5% of the population.

Not entirely. Bernstein's theory is that auto immune attack does not kill all of the beta cells and the remainder are killed off by high glucose. So in essence really tight control, aided by low carb, could preserve some beta cell function.

27 years ago I was put straight onto Insulin and no 'honeymoon period for me ' I didn't even know about it :wideyed:

I was put onto 36u as a mix of Levemir and Novorapid at diagnosis (hba1c of 101). After 7 months of hypos and hypers I decided I needed to do something more than the medics, and followed a lchf lifestyle, which gave me the energy to follow an even more active lifestyle.

Within a few weeks I was reducing the need for insulin, and within 3 months found I didn't need any at all. I've now been 'insulin-free' for 18 months (bar the occasional high-carb meal whilst eating out, when I carb-count and take a small amount of Novorapid).

Although I still test between 5-9 times a day (depending on how much driving I'm doing), I can usually tell from my body what the meter is going to say with good accuracy. Hypo-awareness has not been affected as I'm well aware if the BGs drop below 5 (cut-off for driving).

Whether this good control is through low carb or the honeymoon or a combination, time will tell, but life is soooo much better at present, and friends around me are much happier as two years ago it was doubtful I'd see Christmas.

The OP has been low carbing and this no longer works for him. It doesn't work for everyone anyway, as it depends how early their diabetes was caught and whether it is more LADA-like in its nature.

Mixed insulin isn't as flexible as basal/bolus so can cause issues for some people.

Ya I ve been on lchf diet for over a month now,at the beginning my sugars we're very steady but now a little higher than I like tbh and if I m truly honest to myself the diet isn t for me,i feel lik I ve no energy!! I was working out up to 5 time a weeks,2 hours a day and now very little exercise due to the lack of energy, feeling a little down atm tbh.don t wanna feel guilty about eating due to not been giving the tools to try and at least control my sugars.

Surely you'll still have your pens and in-date insulin in your fridge, speak with your DSN about starting doses but you'll also find the following link helpful which is an on-line carb counting course:
