I think my LADA days are numbered. In the last few days, I’ve lost any control of my blood sugars. For the last two years I was taking Metformin (2000mg) and Lantus (10 units morning and 7 units evening) and my 90 day Time in Range was 82%. It’s suddenly dropped to below 50% and anything I eat raises my bg levels to around 15+. I spoke to Diabetes Nurse today who said I’ll probably need fast acting insulin after the weekend. Is there anything to worry about and/or look out for before Monday. Many thanks for any advice.

Hopefully your lantus will keep you out of diabetic ketoacidosis

which requires a trip to A&E .

Do you have a way to test for ketones? (Either urine testing strips or a bg meter.)

Thank you for replying. Yes, I remembered I should do that. I tested for ketones and they were low (0.2). I have a meter and plenty of strips, so I will keep testing every few hours.

With basal on board I'd not worry at all about DKA unless you go off-scale high and it won't come back down for multiple hours, just the usual approach of drinking water and doing some gentle exercise (walking) to bring it down until you can get some bolus insulin.

This morning after breakfast I went as high as 21, but came down quickly after a walk. I’ve been doing five miles walking a day for the last six years and it has helped enormously until the last couple of days. Now I’ve raised the lantus, my bg levels seem to have stopped staying high for hours after eating. I will drink more water and many thanks for the advice.

Exercise is a great way to deal with rising blood sugars. I walk around 70 miles a week. I would run it, but my knees have had it. I was a competitive long distance runner so exercise is always my go to. I enjoy it.

I have now been reclassified from ‘probably LADA’ to T1 and have my new insulin regime to follow. I’m a little sad to leave LADA behind as after over six years I was beginning to feel I was getting to understand it! Being T1 is so ‘normal’ and I liked the novelty of explaining LADA to people- even when they quickly got bored with my explanation!

Hi I am lada too I take levimer twice aday and fiasp is my fast acting. Only thing i would say you have to be quite good at counting your carbs. Sometimes I don't get it right it crashes me down really fast when I am out walking the dog. But I usual have plenty of snacks in pocket to take never go any without snacks just in case.
God lucky x

Thank you. My fast acting is Novorapid. I’ve started approximate carb counting and am waiting for an appointment with a dietician. I’ve just had a crash on a walk, but luckily I had glucose tablets with me. Lots of learning and tweaking with units over the coming days for me.
