I have lost 5 stone since being diagnosed T2 in June. I have just acquired a BG monitor and I did a casual test in the middle of the day yesterday and scored 5.7. I took a further measurement before my meal this evening and I was astonished to obtain a reading of 4.5! I will get the results of a HbA1C test next week. Fingers crossed!

No big secret Raymond. I cut out booze almost completely, I do not eat biscuits cakes pastries or sweets. I also reduced ny portion sizes. I have not (yet) followed the LCHF diet advocated by many on this forum. Last night I ate a meal of chicken breast, mixed veg. (home grown parsnip carrots and beans (frozen in summer).and, this is where I get banned from the forum, a mixture of croquette potatoes and new potatoes. I followed this up with half a dozen large strawberries. 2 hours after my meal ny bg was 7.9, (just on the verge of non-diabetic/pre-diabetic). The secret if any is weight loss. I hasten to add the above figures are with the assistance of 2x500mg of Metfartin' a day. I also believe this drug has helped with the weight loss simce it inhibits the absorption of sugar in the gut. In all honesty I have not found the regime too difficult, I get pleasantly hungry but only to the point where I really enjoy my meals. I do not desire any of the foods that used to be my staple diet pre-diagnosis and I do not miss the DRIIINNNNNK! (sorry a quick burst of father Jack there). It is all about a wake up call and an adjustment in life style.
P.S. My real name is Ian if you wish to keep in touch leave me messages on this forum. I believe I was fortunate in that my diabetes was picked up early and the tests have revealed no real damage yet. I also have the support of a brilliant diabetes nurse who I can not praise too much. She is very forthright and honest; her manner is a mixture of sympathhy and blunt assertiveness. She does not know what an influence she has been on me.

Morning Ian that is great news to here I also don't drink beer smoke not over weight but I have quite a few health problems one be heart disease had a heart by pass at 42 arthritis gout in both feet and ankles but my biggest draw back is my food In take on a evening my bg count is 9.9 this morning I,am sure this afternoon it will have gone down after I been for a walk on the wild side and then my evening meal it just seem to rocket up,

Weight loss does have a major impact and hopefully your hba1c will show a great improvement. You're lucky to have a good DN, they seem rare beings. My guess is that they'll still want to give you metformin but they may want to reduce the dose.

I too eat new potatoes but I'd steer clear of croquet potatoes. The mashed potato element in croquets make it much quicker to digest. If you make potato vodka, you mash potatoes with hot water to start a process called saccharification, to release the starch so it can be acted on easily and turned into alcohol. You can't make potato vodka out of new potatoes easily.

A 5 stone loss is a major achievement and makes big improvements into many other aspects of your life. Expensive though when you have to buy loads of new clothes.

Good Morning to you Raymond. I also have high blood pressure which is under control from a cocktail of drugs and the weight loss is helping with this also. I used to have gout which I controlled with a herbal remedy, "Goutona". I can no longer obtain this, (the herbalist closed), but I have not had an instance of gout since I have been eating healthily. I believe diet is the secret;F experiment with what and how you eat and trust your BG monitor. Find what works for you we all have different chemistry.

Morning Yorksman, sound advice on the mashed potato. I would not have cooked it for myself but I am in the process of educating my wife. The weight loss is expensive; do they do shirts and trousers on the national health?

Good evening Ian my bg this afternoon was only 6.6 so now I have had my tea which was bake beans on brown bread I,am hoping now my bg will not rocket up to 11 or more fingers cross

Good evening Raymond let me know how your post prandial bg goes. Do not despair if it is high you could make adjustments to your tea to help reduce it. Rather than baked beans which can be high in salt and sugar why not have some brad beans in chopped tomato. The type of bread recommended on the Desmond course was "Bergen" available at Morrisons and some other supermarkets. I have my fingers crossed for a low reading for you.

I am a real bargain chaser (OAP) I found 4 Bergen loaves in Asda reduced to 65 pence so I took them all home to put in the freezer sorry to any other DB s that might have been trawling for bargains !!!

and, this is where I get banned from the forum, a mixture of croquette potatoes and new potatoes
Don't worry - as long as you're getting on fine and not breaking any rules we won't ban you ;)

Congratulations, it sounds a similar story to myself, keep up the good work.

I got my results today HbA1c 32mmols/mol (5.1%). My diebetes nurse is speaking of me as only the third person in her career who has "reversed" their T2. Cop for that Mr. Diabetes!!:) On the downside she is not happy with my Cholesterol levels (5.8. 1.76 HDL 3 LDL). If my diet was any cleaner it would be sterile so she is advocating a months trial of statins (Sinvaststin 40mg).:(
Nursie was advocating coming off Metformin completely but we have decided to reduce to 500mg once a day. Reviewed after 3months and another HbA1c test.
All in all a result!!
I will remain on the forum to give and receive dietary and exercise advice and I hope my story serves as encouragement for newly diagnosed T2s.
Thanks for the support happy Jack.

Congrats on your great results. It is indeed very encouraging to know that it can be done.
I'm finding it hard to get my morning BG below 6's, though I have lost nearly a stone over the past 6 weeks since diagnosis. I tend to eat dinner late at night, as it is summer here in Aus. Do you think this would affect my morning readings?

Thanks Karbstruck
I believe that it it is not unusual for mornig BG readings to be quite high; something to do with the liver releasing glucose to give you energy to start the new day. However, I am sure that there are members of the forum that know more about this than me.
Good luck
Jack
