I am likely to be spending some time in hospital in a couple of weeks am I likely to be able to eat low carb while there or do you think I am going to be inundated with food from the eat well plate. I'm not sure I'll get the choice.

Umm...yes, I think you are going to be limited. Are you going to King's Mill or QM at Nottingham?
I don't know about QM but last time I stayed in King's Mill...though it was few years ago...they had menu that one could order from...but even then..it was limited. The food itself wasn't bad at all. As for breakkie...well that was all about cerials, maybe a biccie with hot drink or yogurt, toast, fruit...the usual stuff..definitely no low carb stuff!
Maybe you could enquire advance what are you choices to follow your eating plan..and have some kind system set up before you even get there...or stock up with appropriate 'snacks' to keep you fuelled correctly.

Being realistic, I think its highly unlikely you will have a low carb dietary choice, so best not to expect it. Its the NHS and as they don't endorse LC for diabetics, it won't be there.

You may also find you are given a specialised diabetic menu, which you can of course refuse, you may well be better off choosing from the usual menu and leaving what you're not happy to eat.

Brekkie is the hardest meal. Cereal, toast, fresh orange juice. Hope everything goes well for you John and that you're not in too long, keeping fingers crossed that food won't be too much of a worry for you:)

QMC but I think food wise there going to be very similar.

thanks for your replies Finsky and ladybird64 I had thought what you both have said is correct but was hoping that they might of been a little more enlightened these days.

@ladybird64 I hope not to be in too long but depends on if I have to spend some time in the ICU or not and to cap it all the cardio vascular anaesthetist want's to boost my steroid dosage prior to the op so that's going to put my BG up a bit as well ah well just have to accept it then try and get back to normal as soon as possible.

Do you think I should take my meter with me or will they keep track of my BG while I'm in there?

@mahola OMG! though I shouldn't be surprised as I live a ten minute drive from Kingsmill and the wife works in admin there though I've not eaten there as a patient ever.

They did my bgs John, but in the end I told them not as it was pointless - my levels were ok, they were testing x3, all before meals, and I also really wanted to be left in peace! It's your call John, but I think take it only if you won't get stressed by raised levels, which you know is a possibility. You won't be able to change things while you're in there, but as soon as you're home, you can take things at your own pace:)

That makes a lot of sense I'll leave it home and take things as they come thanks ladybird64

I would get the wife to bring food in for you.
The other choice is when you can eventually get around, go to the restaurant every hospital has and get a salad or bacon and eggs.
Or order a salad in.

If desperate, say you are gluten intolerant, this usually helps with choice.

When I was in hospital for my 72 hour fasting test, I couldn't believe the diabetic choice patients had, no low carb, no chance of me eating it!

Hope it goes well John, take care.

Yes, hope it goes well.

I have already had discussions with Mr B for my dietary care package if i am ever hospitalised.
This kind of thing
- tins of fish
- bags of salad leaves
- mayo in a squirty bottle
- tomatoes
- baby bell
- 70% choc
- bags of nuts
- berries
And then odds and ends when he visits.

Hope your op goes well and you are back with us soon.

Just a wee note of caution @nosher8355, no disrespect intended..

I think given the nature of John's hospital stay, it is really a totally different scenario to a fasting test, and maybe he should just relax the rules a little while he's there, especially as he may have to be in ICU for a short while. Bacon and eggs might not be the best food to be thinking about when in immediate recovery, that can wait until he gets home. Plenty of time to get back on the wagon, but occasionally, we have no choice to go with the flow - priorities and all that:)

My hubby had to bring in food for my hospital stay as they could not cope with my eating a salad with salmon or chicken or tuna....
Mine was due to aspartame/sweetener/preservative intolerances....not low carb. However they didn't mind food being brought in and storing it in a fridge until I was able to eat..

Thanks for all your replies it's given me real food for thought. I think I'm going to have to play it by ear and just see how it goes it is time the NHS got up to date though and gave people a bit more choice..
