I assume she means 20mmol/L before the meal and 35 mmol/L after (I am surprised the meter goes that high). Given that previous threads suggest that
@Lowcarb 2 is going low carb, you have to wonder whether there may be a misdiagnosis here - ie LADA rather than T2...
In any case, insulin isn't necessarily the end of the world at all. I'd argue that it gives you more control than diet/pills where the only thing you can do to bring your blood sugar down is fast and wait. (Disclaimer here: I'm a T1 diabetic.)
