Hot Flushes and Diabetes

my first visit to the gp was with lots of problems i thought were all linked to the menopause and i could no longer cope - it was not menopause but type 2 - i was given metformin, started quite lo-carb but not zero carbs, lost 2stone without trying, gained all my energy back, aches and pains disapperared slowly but surely - (i was having difficulty lifting my arms to dress!!) This happened May 2011 - its taken a while but get better daily. I still have an occasional 'hot sweat'. My various illnesses through life have all been connected and i should probably have been diagnosed earlier My cholesterol is quite high but the ratios good and triglycerides low so against gps advice no statins for me as yet!

My doctors are really good. At my last diabetic check up was discovered I am very anaemic. Had lots of tests (cos never thought for one minute that it was the cause of my monthies, plonker that I am, lol) all came back negative. Realised after discussion with friends and daughter that "mom, thats what they call heavy" and my friend saying "have you forgotten the monthly that lasted for 3 weeks?". I had.

Was recommended the mirena coil by my doctor and diabetic nurse and went to see the family planning doctor at the pratice who agreed that the mirena coil would be a good idea. (I am 52 and going through the menopause). She thinks I may have a fibroid but decided that we would try the coil but depending on the size of the coil it may fall out. Only had it done on Friday, so far so good me thinks.

Bleeding has now arrived heavy today but not sure its down to the normal monthly (its six and half weeks since the last one) or whether its due to the coil.

I have noticed that my bg's have got better since having this inserted. Are my readings better because of the mirena coil or is it just coincidence? They have not reduced drastically but normally when my monthly arrives my bg's go up but this hasnt happened so far and today two hours after lunch my bg was 5.4 Best ever reading!

Well I have had hot flushes for 11 years, type 2 foor 6 years and have been low carbing for 6 years and it hasd made no difference to me!!

On the subject of the Mirena ... it has totally transformed my life!! xx

Googlegoss, don't be surprised if your periods don't stop at once. I seem to remember that I had a couple of bleeds at least after the Mirena was fitted, and then a few months almost continuous slight spotting before everything ceased. I think everyone reacts differently to begin with, but like CathyN - it completely transformed my life! 18 night-time STs in one 24-hour period is not fun - not to mention the pain :cry:

Thanks Viv. I read that it could take a few months to sort itself out. Think I may end up of 600mg ferrous sulphate a day soon due to blood loss. Am losing heavy today but its in fits and starts. Beginning to wish I had bought a spare pair of trousers to work, lol.

Defo not coming back as a girlie next time :lol:

That's why I started on the red wine - iron content :shock: :lol: . Though Phoenix tells me it doesn't work - wrong sort of iron - I've never been anaemic in my life :wink:

I'm very anaemic Viv. Hair gone really thin, ridges down my nails. Plus cant do as much as I could. Cant walk too far as am to knackered. Have to do things in little spurts at a time, lol. Used to walk to work but 2 miles is just too far now, just cant do it. Hopefully it will get sorted and I can start walking again.

Sounds awful - you have my sympathy! (and empathy - my hair has gone really thin too!). I assume they've checked you for hypothyroidism? Have a look at the ThyroidUK website for a list of symptoms - it's possible to have all the problems and still have your tests in the "normal" range.

Otherwise - broccoli etc, and the darkest chocolate you can eat (the higher the cocoa content, the lower the carb). You probably know all this already .

I was diagnosed anaemic at the same time as the T2. I'd had horrendous periods, flooding etc. Turns out I was growing a fibroid. Went on the iron tablets and dear little fibroid went yum yum and grew to be football size. It had to be removed with a 'nice' incision down from my belly button hysterectomy. Solved the problems with my periods though ....

Kept my ovaries, and four years on have had a few hot flushes (this was in the summer when my control was better), but they seem to have gone away at the moment.

I am a 51 year old male - recently diagnosed type 2 but I believe "borderline" for over 20 years.

Only since I became diagnosed have I realised that too many carbs in a meal brings on my hot flushes (that I have experienced forever) -I am convinced that it is purely diet + type 2 related.
