hot weather and bs

well its happening again, as soon as the weather gets hot my bs' goes sky high. normally my range is between 5.5 - 7.0, nowadays with the temperatures soaring i have been hitting 12-14, my consultants saysi'm intelorant to heat - does anyone else have these symptons?

from a hot 24 degree Monday in Wiltshire

Yep, I'm exactly the same. I always know when we have a hot day that my levels will run higher. I find it worse if I'm active in the heat, such as going for a walk. I really try and avoid going for walks or doing anything where I'll be moving or rushing about a lot because I will always sky-rocket.

Must be heat intolerant myself.
 
I don't know if it is connected with the heat but I am getting the opposite, during the day 3 days out of the past 4 I had felt odd almost like a hypo but not so bad, and when I tested repeatedly on 2 of those days my blood sugar had dropped 1 - 2 mmol/l in 30 mins, an that was long after I has taken insulin. Very odd. It didn't drop too low though 5.1 was the lowest, so maybe I only felt strange because it was dropping quickly?
 
I was the opposite, my levels were constantly low. I couldnt even go out for walks as i would end up getting a hypo. I did get a good few more hypos than i normally would.
 
Well the above comments sort of help with my query, so maybe I could ask something here?

I have been sleeping badly/restlessly due to the light nights, heat, and possibly the slight hayfever (much better most of the time than when younger, but still use beconase and/or eye drops on one or two days a week) and am getting stressed because morning readings have gone above 5.0 recently. Don't laugh, some people would think that good, but for me it's a change I don't want. The meter has been misbehaving badly for a while ("error" as often as doing it right) so I bought a new one, but it still reads 5.3!!!!!

Can I relax and put the change in fasting levels (always 4 point something, occasionally 3.7 or less) down to heat, sleep, stress and hayfever, do you think? Or should I be getting worried on top of that?? Thanks for any comments. I've lasted a year doing well, but the thought of losing control so soon after diagnosis makes me a bit wobbly.

I fail to see how you are losing control with just the odd level in the 5's.......?? Most people would be more than happy to achieve that sort of control.

Whilst your levels may be admirable for you.........the 3.7 mmol/l etc are in hypo territory yet I believe you are on no meds ? That makes me wonder what sort of foods you are eating, none or minimal carbs ?

Do you feel OK at these levels ? They are certainly not recommended to be that low as in most people they would have had some awareness of being hypoglycaemic......some symptoms etc. If you don't have any signs then that isn't a good thing. If you drive then these low levels are not advisable as you could well find that your driving ability is impaired, even though you might think you are fine.

As far as I am concerned, apart from the hypo levels..... you are doing great.........why change what isn't broke !

Oh gosh, yes, I agree with Ken, Dragongirl. Please don't stress yourself out because your levels are in the 5's!! That's a great level to be at. Nothing wrong with it at all. Flippin' diabetes is enough of a stressful pain in the bum without anxiety over perfectly great levels.

When I said I go high in hot weather, I was meaning into the 12's and 13's, etc.
 
Thank you both of you. I will try not to add stress to the list, as I know that is counterproductive. You are both on meds so I realise things are a little different, but no, if it reads 3.7 - 4.5 ish at 8am (which it usually does) then I simply feel peckish, but in any case I go get my two mugs of tea and work in bed for a while until hunger makes itself felt again. I would never ever leave the house or go out driving without brekkies though, even with a dead early start to the day, so not in any danger from that. If I were on meds I would try not to be low but without meds it seems that this is my body and that is what it does. It was only the upward trend in the last week I was worried about. I already eat 3 meals and two snacks each day to try and keep my weight up at around 8st 5-7lbs, which I also still feel may turn out to be a losing battle. It may sound good to those with higher figures, but I don't think any of us has an easy time; it's just a different problem for each of us. Thanks again.

The fact that I and others here are on some forms of medication has absolutely nothing to do with it. The meds are to lower our higher levels only. If you are in a hypoglycaemic state it is not a good place to be, Diabetic or not. Hot weather and lack of food can be one of the causes of a hypo in anybody, your body is using up the stored glucose in your body which then gives out warning signals that you are getting too low. When you feel odd that is your body telling you in effect....I need some food, some fuel as my tank is running low.

Way before I was a Diabetic I used to feel really bad, feeling awful when I had had nothing to eat. Something I did on a regular basis for hours at a time. I now know why I felt that way. I was in a hypoglycaemic state. My BG levels were way too low. We have also heard from other posters about friends and relatives who have tested levels when they feel bad and lo and behold many of them have had ultra low BG levels. You should check out hypoglycaemia in non-Diabetic's.....the information is all out there and makes interesting reading. A hypo is not a good state for anybody.

ANYBODY can suffer from hypo's even non-Diabetic's. It is not something that you should really drop into. Slightly higher is always better, especially as you are a Diabetic.

i would like to ask a question about hypos. i have all the signs there and i get very irratable, but on some occasions i get the same signs when im very high which leaves me in a perdicament when im out as in what do i trust, eat something or exercise. does anyone have the same problem. ive also found that if i have something very high in fat ie pork scratchings or corned beef it sends my bgs right down into 4s and i get hypo signs within half an hour. i know common sense would tell me if im high or low by tracing what ive had to eat but i get irregular readings with some of my food. for example in the morning i have 1weetabix 20g of pumpkin seeds table spoon of almond powder and strawberrys. now sometimes in the first hour it goes up by 0.3 points and other times it can put me up a whole 1.5mmol. thing is i get a headache when im high and a headache when im low which one do i trust. same with granola ive had instances whn its put me high first of all and other times ive actually gone very low in the first hour?
 
Hi bedshaped, I'm assuming you have a meter? Would it not just be easiest to test when you're feeling hypo/hyper to confirm exatly what it is you're dealing with?

As victry77 says the only way to know what is going on is to test. I have the same problem, so I keep my meter to hand at all times. Simples ! :)

I went away and read about hypoglycemia in non-diabetics on netdoctor and found the diagnosis level was stated to be 2.5! And to only be bothered if you have some of the other symptoms. I may be diabetic but I'm not that low in the morning (ever) and think that for me high 3s must be okay in the morning (and it's not that often - usually in the 4s) especially as I feel fine and have no symptoms of that kind. I really would notice - I hate feeling ill, and in truth, I haven't been ill once since changing my diet, which makes you think! But I will keep watch, following your advice. Thanks. My (hopefully temporary) problem seems to be getting some decent restful sleep so I'll work on that and see how it affects things. I'm due at docs within the month anyway for the next hba1c...

That 2.5 mmol/l level is for a diagnosis in Hospital not a general test for hypo's. The level is still anything below 4 mmol/l is considered hypoglycaemic. I am glad you will keep an eye on it, low levels, contrary to what some posters elsewhere say is not good for you at all. The fact that you say you are OK does not mean you are not hypoglycaemic if your levels are below that number.

The answer is yes........Hypoglycaemia is just the medical term for low blood glucose levels. No more, no less. ANYBODY can have a low BG level at various times. There are many who don't recognise it when they have it, they usually put it down to being hungry, a bit 'crotchety' sometimes perhaps. If they were to check their Bg levels they would probably find they were below 4 mmol/l.

As Diabetic's we have the advantage in that most of us have testers and can see exactly what our level is at any time, then we can do something to rectify the situation..........fast acting carbs until a bit higher then a small carby snack. The recognised way to treat a hypo.

A non-Diabetic just get's on with it and makes excuses to all and sundry, usually the wife/husband/partner why they are so 'crotchety !' They just don't know about it. You usually find they say they feel better after something to eat..........same process really.

It could be lack of sleep, (see my latest post on body clocks) we know well that the liver dumps glucose in the morning to prepare us for the days work, if you are not sleeping well and the bedroom is too light, your body may be fooled into dumping glucose earlier than normal. Try a fan or ac in the bedroom and blackout curtains - if you want to experiment. Or don't worry at all as your levels aren't a problem, I'm sure they'll come down again in the autumn!

On the other hand levels can creep up and it's often just a slow deterioration in the pancreas that we can do nothing about - in your case you've a long way to go before even meds will be necessary so keep up the good work and stay in control as much as you can.
 
I am new to this site, I to have problems with the hot weather, I have T2 and on Metformin 1000mg x 2 a day. Befor i was diagnosed i was constantly sweating even in the winter and never felt the cold for three years untill i went on meds.
When I think im having the a hypo and i test my leavels the lowest they have been is 5.2 but i even get them when my leavels are in the 7s. I asked the GP could it be due to my leavels being high for so long that my body thinks it is low and she said it could be.
Now the hot weather is sending the leavels all over the place, making me so ill, they range from 8.1 to 18.0+ the GP said that its when they get into they get into the 20.0s then i should get to the hospital, but they did'nt tell me how i can get them down for people who are on tablets and diet. My Gp is sending me for tests as the sweting is getting worse agane and she is seing if it could be my firoid glands or its due to the diabetes or the Fybromyalga or it could be both.

I have had the problem of excessive sweating for some years now and it has become very embarrassing. I didn't know it could be due to diabetes. The sweating is in unusual places
such as forearms and the backs of my hands. Face too which is embarrassing. I am type 2, Metformin, levels well under control. I have tried taking Sage with no effect. I think I have mentioned this before but never found a solution. With lots of new members perhaps
someone knows what I could take (natural supplement?) Thanks for any info/help :)
