How do I cook brown rice?

Something I've never bought before is brown rice. Bought some today in a health food shop here in France (they don't do it in the supermarkets). It has no instructions on the pack just says it's long grain brown rice. How long do I need to boil it for please? I presume it takes longer than white rice.

Here is the best tip I ever got for boiled rice although it was intended for white rice I suppose a little experiment will tell if brown rice behaves differently although I don't see why it should.

One measure of rice to one and a half measures of water. Simmer (low as possible) for 10 minutes then leave to stand for 10 minutes. Never stir it, just leave it to stand throughout.

I sometimes use brown basmati rice, and it does take longer than white rice. It's best to soak it for at least an hour before cooking. White rice usually takes about 15 minutes but brown rice takes about 45 minutes.

My Chinese Wife--excellent cook--advises 15-20 minutes for white rice & 25 to 40 for brown rice (two meals for two) with at least 10 minutes wait time.

However, she uses non-processed rice and says the cooking & drying times will vary with the amount of rice used & of water added--always sample it for taste/texture & be careful not to burn it.

Her best advice is to buy a rice cooker & let modern tech do it for you automatically.

I'm sure you all know that when reheating rice, make sure its piping hot through, there are toxins in it that can make you ill. Its not the dodgy curry mate its the rice.
