@cdpm, You mentioned in your first post on this thread that you are being overseen by professionals, who are pitching a calorie count of between 1300 and 1600? And, you aren't currently at least, on the denture/implants route so eating without teeth. ( And only eating the special shakes and soup. And the no teeth supports that?) Are you on a planned and monitored low calorie diet then? Which - of course you are hungry, I would say - a natural consequence of that weight loss route.

The very first appt. Many years ago now, they handed me a 1300 calorie diet. With 15 choices of 15 grams of carbs each. Plus the other foods like 3 fats 7 protein and unlimited of certain veggies.
So like 225 carbs grams?
I have not seen them for a long time. I did call them after the teeth came out but they said to eat ice cream, flavored sugared instant oatmeal, puddings.
All high sugar foods. So were very unhelpful.
I'm on my own with the diet.
The 1600 calorie diet I referred to was given to me 30 years ago after my baby was weaned. I like that diet but it's still very high in carbs too. It had 14 carbs choices of 15 grams each so not much different.
Idky they give such a starvation diet out here.

Nope no dentures will be coming my way. That's why it's so important to figure out what to eat/drink to be compatible with diabetes.

yeah - it's the 'eat less, exercise more' mantra. Which seems to have a very high failure rate for us, but that doesn't seem to have affected how often it still gets trotted out. And suggesting a type two diabetic eats ice cream and puddings? Egads! (I eat stevia sweetened ice cream actually, but yeah.)

To answer the question - how much to eat - I'd say count the carbs, not the calories, and then eat as much fat and protein as feels comfortable to you.

You don't have to try to lose weight - that won't in itself make the diabetes go away - but if you limit carbs to manage the diabetes you will probably lose weight anyway.

This is based on personal experience, of course, and everyone is different.

Like many people here, I'm following a low-carb diet. Based on finger-prick measurements, I've worked out what carb intake corresponds to a "good" blood glucose level for me and I'm eating that much and no more of carbs. And that's working. I've lost some weight as a side-effect but without really wanting to, because I am naturally thin (and now even thinner) so weight-loss was never a goal. I tried counting calories for a while, to make sure I was getting enough, but that didn't seem terribly useful and I stopped doing it. Now, I eat as much fat and protein as seems satisfying - if I get hungry or feel like a snack, I eat a lump of cheese or cook a piece of meat.

My a1c in June was 5.5. But none of my other numbers match that.
Have you been tested for things like anaemia or iron deficiency? Those can cause false low hba1c results.
In people where it's suspected the hba1c may be off, often a fructosamine test is used instead of the hba1c.
