How Do You Quench You’re Thirst?

Alcohol is not a good option when starting on insulin or when BG is very high.
The question I believe was that @Libby3781 who according to her profile is T2 and takes Metformin SR asked what do you use to quench your thirst. I answered as a T2 also on a Metformin XR.

No mention of Insulin or high bgls there...

How do I quench my thirst?
Water. If that doesn’t work then there is something wrong.
A good cold beer would quench my thirst but I no longer drink it.
A long cold G&T with lots of ice. That would work.
Water though. It’s what humans are designed to consume as a first call to a thirst response.
Mind you cutting carbs would help to cut down on blood sugars - granola, brown bread? Do a bit of research but if you are T2 on insulin, be careful and perhaps ask similar people.
If you urinate often then try making up a litre of water with a pinch of salt (not sodium), a dash of cream of tartar for the potassium and a splash of apple cider vinegar. Keep in the fridge and sip. I put lime juice in mine. Might help.

Espresso cup of coffee at breakfast and for elevenses
Caffè Americano at lunchtime
≈1L sparkling water to wash down evening meal
Tablets taken with water after meals

Several cans of diet Pepsi, bottled water never tap water not where I live any way, coffee, some times a pint of nice and cold bitter tops.

This morning though I was sitting in the backyard can't call it a garden at 6 AM with a costa Latte from the tasmo machine.

I drink Robinsons 'Real Fruit' squashes, usually orange or lemon, diluted with chilled water. They have zero sugar, but do use aspartame and saccharine as sweetener. I refill the empty bottles with tap water and chill in the fridge to use for diluting the squash, or drinking when I just want some chilled water.
I get through quite a lot in hot weather. Drinking a lot of fluids also fills me up so I don't eat so much.

With minor exceptions, seltzer water is the only fluid I drink. It is better than plain water because the bubbles will prevent me from drinking too much water.

-NEVER drink your fruit. It is devoid of fiber and many needed nutrients and you can drink far too much too fast.
-Stop all added sweeteners (natural or artificial) they only make you hungry and/or thirsty. If something needs to be sweetened then it is probably not good for you to begin with. This may be impossible because high fructose corn syrup is in everything. I will never know how the Kosher Jews do it during the high holidays where I hear that corn is forbidden.

I believe, if it is possible, that I actually caused my diabetes drinking Orange Juice. Convinced that it is "good for you" I was up to at least a quart a day. It was habit forming. The more I would drink, the more thirsty I became. I am sure my blood sugars were sky-rocketing but I was not testing at that time. Did I kill my pancreas, maybe....

That's how a got a BG result of 32 from the lab, and hence a personal phone call from my GP. I had been out for a walk on a hot day before having lots of orange juice about 30 minutes before the blood was taken.

Yes, a little bit of me dies when I think about all the concentrated juice I added water to and drank throughout my pre-diagnosis days. (AND gave to my children!) And, more horribly, just before diagnosis - I had discovered how lovely, available, and cheap Schweppes ginger ale was. Groan.

But water has always been the best for quenching thirst. There is nothing like drinking water when you have built up a real thirst.

For me - tea, coffee, herb teas, sparkling water, and water.

Alcohol is a different story. I don't count that in the quenching thirst category, but aiding socialising and relaxing category.

I didn't realise that fish were vegetables. Gee, I've learnt a lot from this place.

Should ask @Libby3781 is your thirst accompanied by constant urination as well. That will be one of the give aways of high BG.

Been there too 4-5 years before I was diagnosed. I thought it was ever so good for me too. Mind you, I did eat lot of stuff that I knew wasn't.

Only alleged ones ?
I 'spose there's a few.
Redhead - carrot top
Swedish national - Swede
Irishman - Potato head
Rugby player - cauliflower ears

Just before I was diagnosed I had a raging thirst and NOTHING would quench it. Now I know it was down to dangerously high glucose levels accompanied by high ketones, ie life threatening, Libby, how is it going now?????

Thanks all for you’re hints, tips and advice. Much appreciated.

Thirst issue is much better, blood glucose slowly but surely coming down. Insulin increased yesterday so maybe that’s made a little difference.
