The last few days I’ve been extremely thirsty, and nothing is quenching my thirst.

How do you quench your thirst???

Any hints & tips I’d be very grateful for. Thanks in advance

What are your blood sugars like? If they are high then unquenchable thirst will be likely
Assuming sugars are ok, then in hot weather, I find iced coffee good as a thirst quencher . I blitz a whole load of ice cubes with either this
https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/gb/groceries/califia-cold-brew-black---white-750ml
or with a fresh brewed coffee with cream and a few drops of liquid stevia

Unfortunately, my blood sugar is extremely high. Last week I had my first appointment with the hospital specialists. They put me straight onto insulin. Since Saturday I’ve been increasing that by 2units. So as of last night I had to inject 14units in total.

The insulin is only for last thing at night, and doesn’t rely on eating with it.
My blood sugars are up and down quite a lot, low in the morning then up by lunch/dinner & bed time.

Luckily I’ve got another hospital appointment tomorrow. I’ve been taking my bloods morning, dinner time & bedtime.
Nurse only asked for morning and dinner time, but I’ve wanted to see what bloods are like at bedtime so hence I’ve done that one as well.

When I am thirsty it usually means my BGs are high. BUT water OR tea does it for me :)

I drink coffee in the morning, and herbal teas during the rest of the day. I also eat a lot of plants so don't get very thirsty.

Diabetes is a war against oxidative stress, a lot of teas, including herbal ones, contains lots of antioxidants, they would be a good choice, in my view.

Water with lots of ice cubes, sucking on the cubes as they get smaller is really helpful.

Remember to have a little salt as you are drinking a lot of water, otherwise keep drinking the water. Clearly avoid any drink with sugar including fruit juice.

What are you eating at present?

Eating so far....some mornings Granola,
ham quorn with salad lunch time
Fish of some kind in the evening with salad again. I love so salad so can eat that every day and not get bored.

I love fish, so eat lots of that especially fresh salmon, tuna, cod & haddock. Trying to eat brown wraps instead of bread. I’m vegetarian so overall my diet is pretty sensible

If your blood sugars are high then I doubt anything will properly quench that thirst until those are brought down. Generally though I find coconut water quenches my thirst better than anything else.

I agree with a comment upthread. When levels are high the thirst is a problem as the kidneys fight to lose excess. Keep hydrating.

We can't be sure that @Libby3781's thirst isn't related to her high blood sugars, hopefully once she sees the doctor again things will start to get sorted out.

Herbal teas are very nice though, and a good way to quench thirst.

Hi @Libby3781 ,

The recent weather's heat may be a contributing factor to a thirst.
However, if your BG is too high outside of normal range? I wager this to be the underlying cause to your thirst..

Luckily I’ve got another hospital appointment tomorrow. I’ve been taking my bloods morning, dinner time & bedtime.
Nurse only asked for morning and dinner time, but I’ve wanted to see what bloods are like at bedtime so hence I’ve done that one as well.

Good luck with your appointment tomorrow.
Regarding testing? A good gauge ast to whats happening with the effects of your diet on BG (once the basal rate is set.) would be to test on waking, before each meal & 2 hours after. Then bedtime..

Please let us know how you got on..

If you are eating high carbohydrate foods then you are going to need all the water you can drink to protect your kidneys to whatever extent that can be done - carbohydrates are digested and become glucose in the blood, if your levels are high your kidneys spill sugar into the urine to try to get rid of it, so you need the water urgently.
Try to reduce your intake of high carbohydrate foods - potatoes, rice, any sort of bread - which includes brown versions are not a good idea - but once you do get your carbs under control that is a powerful tool for lowering blood glucose, so you will need to be monitoring and adjusting your use of insulin to match your new BG levels.

Trying to eat brown wraps instead of bread.

Both the Granola and the wraps contain a high level of carbs, these become glocose when you eat them and quickly become blood glucose. The fish and salad is great.

Greek yoghurt with a few strawberries or nuts could be a great option for breakfast so can eggs cooked in whatever way you like them. Olives and avocados are also good if you like them
