Hi all, after much back and forth my daughter is back on track for a pump this coming month. Full of joy/relief and trepidation! The diabetic team have asked me if I want to get the saline filled pump the same as my daughter for the weekend to go through it together. I was wondering if any of you have done this or would contemplate and if so did your child think it was a good idea. I haven't put it to her yet as I am still deciding. i am not squeamish and do not mind needles, if she asked me to do it I would do it in a heartbeat I just wondered would it help her or not?

Do it....I wish my hubby could have had this experience!!!

Not of diabetes,,, - lol- but of the pump.

I think it is a brilliant thing to do

I actually think that would be an awesome experience. I would love it if my boyfriend could try it out for a day or 2. He has more understanding than most, but this would give you such an insight!

My son was never offered the saline, his dad and myself went along with him for the initial meeting and then the actual start up was done with another lad and his parents and we mum's exchanged mobile numbers and kept in touch for support and we see each other at the clinic as well.

I think if it was offered to me I would have done it. As my son is a coeliac as well, when I buy anything new gluten free I will be a guinea pig for him and if I don't like it I will not make him eat it. It's something we mum's do.

:)

Thanks for the helpful insight. Spoke to my daughter and she is all for it. So it looks I am going to do it too. Will let you know how it goes.

Well we went to the clinic yesterday and both got hooked up to the saline pumps. It did sting a little when it went in but not as sore as I thought. I was able to unhook the pump and just have the cannula in now she has the whole works from here until her insulin goes live next week. I slept with it last night as did she and both got on very well. It is amazing how quickly you get used to it and it really doesn't hurt. If you get a chance to do this please take them up on their offer it is worth it. M

Spent the afternoon making a Lycra band for my daughter to put her pump into the kiss and hug she gave me at the end was so worth it. Only a daughter could thank her mother for the lob sided, puckered and unattractive effort I produced!! Don't you just love when they give you unconditional love?

I think its a very good idea, to let you try a pump as well. I hope I get offered to do that, when my daughter gets the pump. It will be good to have a insight of what she will go through.

I think this is a godd idea. You must have a good diabetes doctor. Our doctor wore the pump some days to know how it is for the children. She told us parents about her experience at a meeting.

Now we are just over a week in our 'insulin pump' as opposed to the saline one it was really helpful. I could see how hard to push it in when we were releasing the cannula, how it felt while it was is, how it was starting to feel at the end if the 3 days, how it felt to remove it. It was very valuable for reassuring her when we were doing it on our own for real. Highly recommend doing it. Ps it was the diabetic team that recommended it.
