Hello, I'm ashamed to say I've been in denial about my type 2 diabetes for the last year or so but am now facing it & looking after my health. I am currently Diet controlled but haven't been testing regularly at all as my hba1c has always been normal. My last hba1c is boarderline & so the GP nurse has asked me to test before & after every meal for a week but I'm not sure how long after a meal I should be testing. She said 30mins but I'm sure in the past it's been 1 or 2hrs after a meal. When should I be testing?? Thank you

Hi @Mummy2girls :)

Two hours after the start of the meal is the usual time :) If you want more information, you can also test at one hour after the start of the meal.

*note that the timing begins from the start of your meal - eg lunch at 12.30pm, two hour test at 2.30pm.

It is normally 2 hours, but if you are interested in catching your peaks you can also test at 90 minutes, then 2 hours, and if you are not back down to acceptable levels then test again half hourly until you are. This is aggressive testing though, which often isn't necessary unless you are testing out certain foods or experimenting.

Thank you! That's helpful. I thought it was 2hrs so was surprised when she said 1/2hr but didn't feel confident enough to ask her. I didn't realise it was 2hrs from the start of the meal so that's good to know. Thank you!
