I've been told I have type 1 diabetes though I plan on pushing for further tests to confirm this. The first indication that I had high blood sugars was when the doctor found glucose in my urine are 22 weeks pregnant. I then had a GTT are 30 weeks and was told I had GD. I'm now 8 weeks post partum and my fastings are still fine. My 2 hour readings are also generally fine. it's my 1 hour readings which are high (about 9 - 10). So I've been in this state of insulin resistance for at least 26 weeks probably without much deterioration. When can I expect the diabetes to take hold so to speak?

Type 1 can develop quickly but is usually a little slower in adults than in children. The immune attack destroys the islet cells in the pancreas but Type 1 is only diagnosed when 80% of the islets cells have been destroyed and the remaining cells can't produce enough insulin to control the blood sugar.

So no definite answer as we're all different. You'll see some threads here about when Type 1s think their diabetes started but they're just educated guesses :)

Edited to add: It would be unusual for someone to have sugars low enough to be GD controlled by diet only and then turn out to be Type 1. A burgeoning Type 1 would have high sugars during pregnancy due to the insulin resistance and would probably need insulin to control those sugars. They could still be mistakenly thought to have 'bad GD' that needed insulin, but it would be highly unlikely to be the other way round - that is, someone with no need of insulin in pregnancy being actually a Type 1. Anyone near Type 1 is almost inevitably going to be pushed over into insulin dependency by the placental hormones and need insulin.
