How many carbs

Hi all,

I am not doing low carb but have dramatically changed my diet. I am trying to find a balance, wholemeal bread, smaller meals, less shop bought sandwiches etc. However, I would like to know what grams of carbs per day are ideal to keep the blood sugar steady.

I am on sukkarto one twice a day at the moment and was not issued with a blood testing machine but I have my own, just need to buy some more strips.
Thanks

My feeling is everyone has to find their own level of carbs which keep their blood sugars under control. You have a monitor so once you get the strips try testing before and 2 hours after your meals. Here’s the levels you need to aim for:

Personal I gradually reduced my carbs following diagnosis and settled at 50g carbs per day, which has kept my HbA1c in the mid 30s for over a year now.

I agree with @Rachox about finding your own level. I also manage to keep in the mid 30s but have about 80g per day so that shows the requirement is individual.

I agree with Rachox. I am not low carb, but what I call "modified" carb, in that I eat about 150 grams of low GI carbs per day. But you have to find a level that gives you the BG levels you want.
You could change some of your diet in a small way though; NO shop bought sarnies! They normally chuck in all sorts of dressings and things with high carbs. Look at the carb content of a shop-bought sandwich under the "nutritional info" on the back. You'll see what I mean.
Also, whole grain is better than wholemeal for avoiding high BG peaks.
Lots of people eat Burgen soya and linseed. I did, but have switched to hovis lower-carb seeded bread. Both are lower carb than the standard breads. Even then, not too many slices!

Definitely one you need to discover, both with your meter and also what feels manageable long term. For now I don’t go over 60g but some days am much less. It agrees with my BG readings, I find it’s a comfortable amount that I don’t feel severely restricted, but also gives me room to reduce further in the future should my body decide that that’s too much. We are all different and acceptable carb amounts really do vary between people

Agree with everybody else. It's a personal thing.
Carbs just don't agree with me. The less the better. I even have to be wary of peanuts. Yep. Too many and the pee machine fires up. Sleep goes downhill fast too.

No carbs no problems so I avoid as much as possible simply because it makes me feel better. 1c is low 30's and Bg is around 5. Irrelevant of time of day. Meals may show a bump but maybe 1 point if that.

Thanks all, very interesting

I guess I will see what my first hbA1c will show since being on medication not due until next month. I was lucky because I was diagnosed early and diagnosis was 6.7
