Hi, Maddiemo1
50g of carbs should be fine. Some people don't go so low, some go even lower. The main thing is to make sure you're getting a good range of foods so that all your nutritional requirements are covered.
Have a look at
Viv's Modified Atkins Diet, which is in the Sticky Threads section. That's the diet I use, to lose weight and to keep my blood glucose readings as near non-diabetic as possible. It gives you a basic list of foods that you can and can't eat to achieve a carb intake of about 25g - 30g carb per day. If you want to eat more carbs, add in low GI ones if possible.
For instance, I'm probably eating about 60g of carb per day at the moment. That's because I can't resist apricots and nectarines and greengages, so I get the extra carbs from them - not too many at once!

Apricots and 'gages are quite low GI; as for nectarines, the less said the better! I only eat one a day

.
When you first go low-carb, keep an eye on how you feel. On a very low carb diet, you might feel headachey and a bit 'off'; persevere, and drink plenty of water. You'll soon feel better.
If you have any underlying medical conditions - eg kidney disease - it's worth talking to your doctor. But if you are overall in good health, you shouldn't have any problems. Ask any questions you like as you get going - we're here to help!
I lost 5.5 stone the first time I did Atkins, and I've never felt better in my life! This time round I've lost almost 5 stone so far, but more slowly - only another 5 to go!
