How many km can we briskly walk a day ?

Hi Everyone,

As a diabetics person, how many km can we do briskly walk ? I like to walk more. I don't get time to go to gym for doing heavy exercise. will be walking more will be bad for health like in future Joint problem ?

The current guidelines suggest 30 minutes of exercise around 5 times per week? Remember this is a minimum and walking further/more frequent is likely to do you more good than harm.

With a good quality pair of shoes/boots their should be no reason why you can't rack up the miles :)

I think the best way to go about it would be to slowly increase the distance/duration of your walks over time and then it you experience any pain or discomfort then scale it back a bit until you find a comfortable combination of distance and frequency.

A day off is always good to let the muscles and bones get a wee rest.

there isn't much I dislike maybe rude and aggressive people
I have started walking over the last 2 days to try to lose some more weight! I am at the moment stuck on 13 Stone 2 Lbs. There was a time when walking was very difficult I couldn't walk very far before the pain forced me to stop, but losing the weight has definitely helped. The day before yesterday I walked for 90 minutes and the pain didn't start until 75 minutes into the walk, although I haven't lost anything in the 2 days I intend to try to have a walk everyday.

You can walk as far as you want and feel comfortable with, being on insulin you will need to make some adjustments but that shouldn't deter you, walking is a great form of exercise as you can go at your own pace.

I walk on average 60-90 mins a day and more on a weekend (dog walking).

Thanks everyone. @noblehead , Can i do my insulin adjustment by myself ? i have observed, whenever i walk more then my glucose level go down.

My doctor told me to come once in month to hospital for glucose checkup.

I would only do so if your confident in doing it, if at all in doubt speak with your diabetes team and they will advise.

But yes walking (like many other forms of exercise) can lower bg levels, especially soon after injecting when the insulin is quite active.

I like indoor walking on treadmill. Can see on meter how many kilometres and calories burned, heart rate too. No need to worry about the weather and bumps on roads. Just me.

Unkind people, failure to take personal responsibility.
I go half mile walk most mornings which acts as a dynamic warm up before running a mile. Helps me avoid stretching at the beginning.

I'm planning to do the "march of the dead" (a yearly event) next year which is 100 km. Over the next year i plan on walking more and more, probably going for a 40 km. hike a couple of times, still the actual march is over double that. Right now 10-15 km. is fairly easy, though in the beginning everything started to hurt, it's not so much a question of fitness but of discomfort after a while.

But i think you can walk as long as you're comfortable with it and keep you sugar levels under control.
