How much does one unit of Humalog reduce BS levels?

Hi @wmike_1503

There's no one answer to that. It depends on your personal correction amount. It'll vary from person to person.

Is there some formula to give any idea?
Your doctor should start you on a set ratio and adjust it from there.

There are way too many factors to give you a responsible answer that includes a number.

1 unit in the morning does very little to my levels whereas 1 unit in the evening might drop them significantly.

I take 1/2 unit with each meal but each meal gets bigger as the day goes on. As Tork said it does very little in the morning but does a lot at night. Most people are most insulin resistant in the morning therefore potentially requiring more insulin to cover the same foods later in the day

1/2 unit without food generally lowers me about 25.
Your size, muscle, weight, insulin resistance, activity, what you ate at he last meal etc etc all play a roll

Thank you everyone for your comments. I was considering using a bolus calculator - this would appear to be a waste of time.

Cheers :)

Have a go at using the Rule of 100 that catapillar mentions early, it can work or will give you a rough approximation on how much 1u will lowersyour bg levels, all you do is divide 100 by your average TDD (total daily dose) and the figure that your left with is the amount that 1u should (approximately) reduce your bg levels by.

Thanks - very helpful...

Hi,

I did mean my comment with the best will in the world.

There are too many "variables" on any given day. (For staters.)
It's tricky for anyone to pull a figure up for you. We only know our own bodies..

Sensible advice alert! Please do keep an extra close eye on your BG levels when correcting..o_O;)

I don't think a bolus calculator is a waste of time. I don't have one myself, but my understanding is you con tell it your insulin sensitivity factor for different times of day - you just have to work out your own insulin sensitivity factor first (probably through the 100 rule and a bit of cautious trial and error - as @Jaylee says, if you are correcting keep a close eye on your blood sugar after just to check you don't drop too low).
