How much fat

In view of what has been said about fat in the newspaper and on TV today how much saturated fat would you eat in a day
We know that low carb and higher fat lowers BG but do we ever wonder if a long term high fat diet is good or bad for the rest of our body and organs
My consumption of saturated fat is quite low in a day I have eggs and cheese but not every day a little butter on vegetables and sometimes some cream on my fruit but I never eat red meat

Why should it not be Annie? Our ancestors evolved in a world where they would hunt and eat fatty meat, eggs where they could find them etc. Would nature/God (delete as appropriate) have allowed a system in which fat consumption was bad for you?

I don't eat much fat, I don't think natural fats are bad for you but my taste buds and my body don't like them, I don't really like cream, don't like the visible fat on meat.

I eat a little cheese, use olive oil cold on salads and veg as a dressing, a few nuts, eggs, avocado - I have half fat creme fresh because I prefer the taste. I dry fry in a ceramic pan because I hate grease. I eat bacon but cut off the rind, it makes me gyp.

The reason I avoid some fats isn't because I think they are particularly bad for you in moderation but because I don't like them

I have about 100g carb a day with protein and some fats i calorie count at 1300 per day I hold good numbers with a massive weight loss so it works for me.

We each have to find a way that we can eat long term and I respect that others like the high fat and that's fine it works for them, but not me I like how I eat now so does my body

As a type 1 I've never really been bothered about adding up the amount of fat or protein I eat each day and my only concern is the carbs for my bolus calculation, but I know if I add too much fat to my meals as it plays havoc with my bg levels several hours after eating, so try wherever possible to eat fat in moderation along the same lines as carbs and protein.

The Mediterranean diet would probably best describe the diet that I follow.

I don't go out of my way to eat fat. I too don't like the fat on meat or bacon (although the fat on pork, done right, is gorgeous). As such I eat the saturated fats that meat comes with in the meat part, and cooking I allow the meats to cook in their own fats.

Can't say I've ever really measured it though.

I don't really do butter or cream - maybe a tsp butter if I have spelt bread. I eat small amount of cheese every day. I don't eat the fat on some meats ( now I eat my steak rare I can't abide the cold fat) but do eat fatty meats like lamb and pork regularly. I drink semi skimmed lactofree milk or skimmed milk or soy because I've never liked full fat milk and prefer the lower fat versions of Greek yogurt ( there's not much difference between the carbs off the full fat Fage and the low fat one and I eat it so rarely at this time of year) I do think you need to find what works best for you and your lifestyle while keeping carbs as low as possible. As I was extremely overweight at diagnosis I didn't need much of anything. As I near target I'll have to think about what to eat for maintenance.

Ooh yes tim - I have to agree there I too make an exception for pork - a piece of slow cooked belly pork that is cooked properly is unbeatable!

pork is about 1/3 sat and high in mono..sounds good to me :)
lard..Total Fat 100 g
Saturated fat 32 g
Polyunsaturated fat 11 g
Monounsaturated fat 41 g

I've never really measured how much fat I eat, although I intend to soon. Some days I have around 125g butter, but as for an average day I don't really know.

Yes I've wondered about which diet is healthiest and since almost all of the most recent studies/surveys say that high fat is healthy that is what I have opted for. I know that a low fat diet was not healthy and caused me lots of problems. I haven't seen the news on the TV today. I know the TV health news is always years behind what I have already discovered anyway so I don't tend to take any notice of it.

I think the omega3&6 are important too, that is why I buy organic when I can find it. Butter, cream and milk, no problem, but it is hard to find nice and affordable organic cheese. And pork.

As we keep sheep most of the meat we eat comes from the farm though.

I am sticking with my way of eating , it works for me , no good broad statements being made from the media ...there are some people that can , some who can't follow a diet of fats ...it is for each individual ...

There is different news all he time , they say "some experts" that does not mean all ...
Just heard the news again still a lot of experts who can't agree ...

Remains , do what works for you ...

Getting really complicated the news has just said , re the eighties study ...they have just given advice to a balanced diet ...

Keep calm and everything in moderation ..is the lasted news this lunchtime ... Just sharing the update ...

Maybe we should start an Organic Cheese topic. Our farmer's market has loads of them and I think they all sell on-line.

I eat butter, a lot of cheese, mayonnaise, a lot of eggs, lean beef (don't like the fat on meat), roast lamb but avoid the fat bits, loads of salmon, bacon including the fat as that's the best bit if crispy, we fry in a smear of rapeseed oil or butter, FF yogurt, cream once a day in coffee, an odd 97% sausage here and there.

According to MFP I should be eating 140g fat a day to reach my calories if I eat 45g carbs and 90g protein. I'm eating on average 52g carbs a day, so I don't need all the 140g fat. And that would be too much for me anyway. I'm usually somewhere around 100g.

Do you eat oily fish @AnnieC, olive oil dressings on salads, nuts, dairy?

It's the processed meats with their chemical additives that I steer clear of. Many of the substitutes for other foods too as they are like chemical cocktails. Atkins Bars have a long list of chemicals.
