How much fat

I don't eat much fat, I don't think natural fats are bad for you but my taste buds and my body don't like them, I don't really like cream, don't like the visible fat on meat.

I was exactly the same, until a year ago I started to eat to my meter, and became low carb. Then I started to go underweight, so gradually increased my fat. Now I eat all the natural fat I can. Double cream, fatty meats, coconut oil..... Your taste buds change / acclimatise. My diet for last 6months is around 5%carb (36g), 15% protein and 80% fat. My calorie intake is around 3,500, any less and I loose weight. 6'-2" BMI 22. Hba1c 5.1%.

Worried what it might be doing cholesterol wise etc. I asked my Dr for a blood / health check. Dr and diabetic dietician say all is very good and are now supporting me with my LcHf diet... Dietician says it all goes against her training, but my results are the same as another LcHf patient.

I know what you are saying and I agree that tastes can change and I like you have been eating to my meter for 6 years now - I have had great success with the way I eat and really don't want to force myself to eat things I don't like - when I was a kid I was made to always clear my plate and not to leave the table until I did - a generational thing I think which probably contributed to my food hang ups - still feel I have to clear my plate even when full. I can't even bring milk or cream to my lips without retching so for me there is no pleasure in trying. One of the reasons I have never tried the Newcastle diet is that I just could not bring a milkshake within a foot of my face lol

I think I get enough from the natural fats I eat in cheese nuts avocado cold olive oil and olives, I don't have a sweet tooth, I very rarely get over hungry but I eat very regularly at the same times every day so that may help with that and very rarely have cravings, I find when I do crave it for salt rather than carbs and a handful of salted nuts usually hits the spot.

Glad you have the support of your HCP it certainly helps when they accept you know your own body, I am lucky in that I have a good GP and DSN - even the dietitian I saw when first diagnosed was all about keeping carbs low

I found a low-fat version of a food which is actually lower carb than the full fat version.

It is Tesco's Halloumi

Full fat = 2.2% carbs
Lighter version = 0.7% carbs

I guess they must be knocking out the fat and replacing it with water to keep the calories down

I did the www.bloodsugar101.com nutritional calculator thing to see how much fat/carb/protein I should be eating in a day, and was amazed at the amount of fat that was allowed on a low carb ketogenic diet.

Don't think I have ever managed to hit that level of fat intake a single day in over a year!

So I eat an average of 20-40g carbs most days
Protein to my appetite
Fat to my appetite - usually olive oil, rapeseed oil, coconut oil, butter, cream and the fat on meat and oil on fish. Also almonds, peanuts, avocados and krill oil capsules.

One thing I think it is important to recognise though - you can only eat higher fat if carbs are very low.
Having high carbs and high fat together is a recipe for disaster, weight gain, high cholesterol and (IMHO) a ticking time bomb.

Now beautiful, tasty, wonderful salads 5 days a week. Today - my favourite 4 belly rashers, heaps of veg and M&S peppercorn sauce. My favourite sunday roast....

Since adding olives and avocado I am absolutely hooked.

Get breakdown of cholesterol results Tuesday...
