Type 1 How much sugar?

Hi all, just wondering…

Does anyone know how much sugar (no insulin) it would take to cause a coma?

In a word, no, and I'd imagine that it would very from person to person also. But a coma from hyperglycemia is typically caused by lack of insulin, and for a full blown T1 would be caused by diabetic ketoacidosis, high blood sugar accompanied by high ketones.

Can I ask why you're asking?

No. No-one can answer this question.
If you can dose correctly for it, no amount of sugar will cause a coma.
If you use a pump and you take it out, even no sugar at all can cause hyperglycemia, ketoacidosis, and coma.

So the answer is anywhere from no sugar at all can cause a coma to regardless how much sugar and you can still prevent a coma.

May I ask why you ask?
I'm rather alarmed by your question.

It is called depression

Hi @JenJen9

I am really really sorry that you are feeling depressed and I am really concerned about your state of mind at the moment

Do you have anyone at home with you right now? A friend you could call?

If you don't feel you can talk to friends or family or anyone you know, you could call Samaritans 116 123

Honestly just having high blood sugar can be bad for your state of mind, and make you feel physically very ill. and depressed. Do you have high blood sugar at the moment?

Lots of us T1s go through periods of depression, sometimes influenced by the diabetes sometimes just because life is hard, sometimes both. Please know that you aren't alone.

Like everyone has said just can’t say , the only experience I’ve had of near coma was when I was first diagnosed which resulted in diagnosis and a 2 week wait to go to hospital ( common back in 1980) I felt like total ###@ , I know now that I couldn’t last 2 days with sugars that high without taking insulin ,I am sorry to hear about your depression I really hope you get or are getting help to assist with it
