I wear a fitbit 24/7 and try and walk a decent distance daily.

10,000 steps is a standard goal, and quite doable for some? most? people, but I find that my knees, back and ankles play merry hell if I aim that high, so go for 7,000 on a daily basis. The only reason I achieve it is that we have two dogs whose hearts would break if they didn't get their daily sniff-widdle-and-scamper.

I now do 2x30/40 mins every day and 3/4 1hrs+ walks a week - easier in summer! We get a LOT of rain in central Scotland. I also walk to shops etc and try to generally move more during the day

I do 3 * 3 miles walks a week, every other day and on the days in between I do 40 minutes on the exercise bike. I prefer to walk and get the fresh air but as I work from home and walk slowly due to other health issues it takes a chunk out of my day which stops me doing it every day.

I also use http://gb.mapometer.com/ to map out the routes I walk so I can vary it up rather than doing the same thing every time.

I used to walk about 3 miles to work every weekday when I was working, which kept me reasonably fit and physically healthy. I retired two years ago and became a couch potato. I think that contributed to my T2 diagnosis this year. I was also comfort eating more sugary stuff because I had more time on my hands, and put on over a stone.

Since being diagnosed I have started walking again. For the first three months until my retest I aimed at 20,000 steps a day, to lose as much weight as I could (along with LCHF and diet). I lost about 1 stone and 7 lbs.

Now I aim to walk 10-15,000 steps a day. I could do more as I have more energy as I lose weight and get fitter, but I don't want to risk getting Plantar Fasciitis in my feet again. I got that a few years back when I was walking 25,000+ steps a day. It is really painful and stopped me walking much for almost a year.

I do use a pedometer as it helps to motivate me, though I know now roughly how much I need to do - about 1 hour's walking. I generally walk to my local park, walk three times around it, and back home. I have now lost 2 stone, and my HbAic was down from 49 to 44 at my 3 month test.

I do quite enjoy walking. When I was younger and could walk faster I used to feel like I was almost flying along with my feet hardly touching the ground! I used to go on walking/trekking holidays in the UK and around the world, but now I would rather sit around a pool or on the beach.

During the week I walk for a minimum of 1 hour a day, on a weekend it can be 2 hours plus, to me it's the best form of exercise and costs nothing :)

Nowhere near enough:(. Low energy and pain is a real problem and I can't find a way around it.

ah yes, Plantar Fasciitis is a right pain, isn't it?
I wear orthotic insoles or have arch supporting shoes at all times, plus calf and achilles tendon excercises (let me know if you want to know more), which keep mine at bay - but my goodness, it was torture til I learned to take those preventative measures. Pain every step for several years. You have my sympathy!

None !!! , Except to the shops etc...........:) I tried but just could not see me doing it for the long term , which it would need to be............to be any use that is..

I hate walking/running always have, but have always lifted weights...........so........changed my 2/3 days a week of lifting heavy to a 6 days a week higher rep range with lower rest periods between sets system, ............

I cant give it all the credit as also tightened up my diet (LCHF) at the same time ( 3 months ago) but it is working for me..have gone from highs of 18-20 on a bad day to rock solid readings that never go above 7.0 mm/l , and are mostly low 6s or high 5s and still dropping ............4.7 yesterday 2 hours after a workout and then a protein shake with milk:eek:....

What a lot of people forget is walking and lifting are not total opposites ....walking is a bit Anaerobic, not much I give you :) but somewhat and conversely lifting weights is somewhat Aerobic , depending on what you do, but personally a set of squats or deadlifts gets me breathing heavier than any walking.........:)

I have a Fitbit and aim for 10,000 steps a day. I sometimes manage more. I started very slowly in March this year when it was taking me 30 mins to walk 1/2 mile. It had been suggested I try for 30 mins 5 days a week. So that was my aim and as it seemed to be improving my blood sugars I kept it going and slowly increased the distance. My children then gave me the Fitbit and I started aiming for 5,000 and then increased. I'm still very slow but I can keep going.

Nice thread, just in time for me to share my little effort!

I started my new year with Garmin Forerunner 15 with heart rate monitor; I got as gifts for the Xmas. This new gadget replaced my garmin vivofit. I was able to retain the data from the past. Waited for first Sunday in new year; as I normally do 5k run on Sundays. So today's run details:
Distance: 4.7miles; Time: 1 hr.
Avg Pace: 13.06 min/ mile

Today I did not run at my full speed; had a big party last night; so kinda slow n lazy this morning. Started at 7.40am; finished at 8.40am. Went by the clock, took my time and was drinking water in between etc.

Attached are two pics. Screens are big, too much info is there, so not able to attach everything in one peace. I still have to learn how to decipher the info from this new gadget.

Hope this helps.

Hi my advice is to get Garmin Vivofit. No charging is needed, and battery lasts for about an year. No wires to connect to computer, works with ant+ feature - which is really a small usb dongle. It even monitors your sleep. Only one button to press, so no confusion in using either. Works good with Garmin heart rate monitor too. I used it for 2 years; it is really a wonderful experience.

It measures your steps, heart rate [if you have the strap], sleep quality, running pace etc and works as normal watch too. If you don't like to put it on your hand, simply put in your wallet; still works the same!

Vivofit is the cheapest gadget out there.
