HI
This might be a very stupid question. However I want to ask since I try to get my head around why i feel so sick.
'What is a normal rise in BGL after a meal? How much rise is normal whats diabetic ?"
I started to check my BGL's after an hypo in a shoppping centre which landed me in ED :***: . I had several of those episodes before but never had my BGL checked. I often feel vry disorientated,my legs get wonky and I feel lighthaded .
Anyway since i dont particualty enjoy riding in ambulances, I bought myself a BGL test kit so i know what my body does and to avoid fainting.
Well before a meal I had 5.4mm/oL, 2 hours afterwards it was 10mm/oL and 3 hours afterwards it was 8.7.mm/oL.
I had rice and chicken.
Are those readings acceptable? If those numbers are high I can think better and get very edgy or faint if my BGL gets towards 4 or even 3.8mm/oL.
I apreciate any suggestions
Beetle :)

"Normal" non-diabetic blood glucose readings should fall within the following ranges:

Fasting/before meals 3.5 - 5.5 mmol/l
2 hours after meal less than 8 mmol/l

I assume from both your question and your profile that you have not been diagnosed as diabetic. Have you been to see your GP about these hypo episodes? I think the doctor should be your first port of call - explain exactly what you've said in your post and see what he/she says.

A hypo can be treated quite easily if you catch it in time. Always carry glucose tablets with you as well as your meter. If you feel strange, check your BGs. If they are too low for your liking - mid 4s or less - chew a couple of glucose tabs. Test again after 15 minutes. You are aiming to reach the low 5s, for your own comfort. If you're not there, chew another tab.

Glucose tablets are available from most pharmacies and some sweet shops.

Do, please, see your GP as soon as you can. You need to know for certain whether or not it's diabetes.

Good luck!

We are all a little different when it comes to hypos. I'm okay at around 3.5, you apparently are not.

Hi Viviennem
Thanks for your post :)
Yes i always carry sweets with me now. still need to buy those glucose tubes.:)
My old doctor dismissed my concerns about my hypos and my fatigue."U will be right" was sort of his response. I felt so stupid as if i make things up!!Since i have to function and felt unsupported I went to another doc and she ordered heaps of tests. the glucose tolerance test and others for the thyroid . Im glad that a doc actually listened to me finaly.
Im not used to be so tired and useless and cant wait to know whats going on.
Test is next saturday. cant wait for results.

Hey Beetle, just want to let you know you're not alone. I also started testing my own blood sugar after feeling weird very soon after eating and having hypos/reactive hypos when out and about. Kept ending up in an ambulance like you!

Doctors are also likely to be dismissive if you have both high and low blood sugar episodes like we do. Hope you get sorted out! Keep us updated ok?

HI LITTLE WOLF
thanks for all the encouragemnt.
Sorry top hear u ended up in ambulance too!!!!!!
Yes i am always having weird symtoms which are against the docs textbooks.
If u got a disease and u r supposed to cough-im definatley not caughing. If u r supposed to have a fever-nup I wont throw a temp.
So with my funny episodes I guess i will wait forthe test, keep monitoring and hope for a good outcome.i might have some weird mixed disease thingo
Monitoring makes me feel to be in control. I can then see whats going on in my body and how to connect the hypers and hypos to the numbers  Its my little friend now :D
Ill keep u posted whats happening
