You have to realise that these two drugs do different things.
Metformin protects your organs and is a appetite suppressant, amongst other helpful attributes, it is the go to medication when first diagnosed.
The reason why the janumet (sitagliptin and metformin) is because you have insulin resistance and the amounts of insulin necessary for you is not happening. So either by dietary means or a blood glucose lowering drug is used, this is done by stimulating your pancreas to create more insulin in your initial insulin response.
More insulin response, the less glucose is left after eating, especially if you can't lower your dietary choices to a level were medication will be no longer necessary.
If you read the forum, you will find that a low carb higher natural fat diet has worked for many. But it all depends on your circumstances.

Hope this helps

Oh yeah, sorry!
I've been on sitagliptin since 2013 and no side effects.
But individually you may suffer side effects, but it is a safe drug.
If you do have side effects, especially from the metformin, talk to your GP.
