How Should I Use My Logbook Properly?

Hi,

I'm no expert, but this is what I do...

Test before meals. Calculate adjustment dose if high and add this to the carb counted food dose. Record time, BG, carb intake, adjustment dose, total insulin and brief meal description.

Also test and record bedtime BG. As I take Lantus at night, this helps determine that the background dose is about right.

Any hypos are recorded along with the amount of glucose consumed.

It's well worth the hassle in terms of feeling under control.

Good luck.

and don't forget to note if you did any excercise, work or you felt unwell all usefull information to look back opon..

As for the doctors, don't worry go and see them they be more than pleased to have you back on board...

You aren't the first person and you deffiently won't be the last diabetic who's taken time out from controling there condidtion...

At first it will seem very hard work stepping back on and into control, but that because you have to put the work in to find out not only what you are controling but how to control it... But after a while it becomes second nature and a lot easier to maintain montoring books and diaries ect..

When I first started using multiple daily injections( I now use a pump) I logged quite intensively. Now I both test and log a bit less but if BS don't act as 'expected' I'll return to intensive logging. Then I can look for possible reasons.

Detailed logging might include fasting bg, pre meal bs, 2 hours post prandial bg and bedtime bg
I put in carb counts for meal and amount and type of bolus (I'm on a pump) If its a unsual type of meal I might log that. I include exercise, including time and intensity and any extra carbs needed. I'll log hypos and correction doses when blood sugars are too high. I'll mention if its an unsual day ie travelling or sitting in a meeting all day. When on MDI I also logged basal injections.

When I first started I also included more detail about the food eaten so that I then knew how different types of food effects me.

It sounds a lot of hassle but I use a computer program SI diary which makes this fairly easy.
My more normal day to day log include BG tests, amount of carbs and bolus, and exercise. ( I track this because I get a lot of exercise related hypos)
