Greetings. I'm new to this forum, so I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right space.
I'm at a loss. My 54-year-old sister was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 13. She has always been considered brittle and is insulin-dependent (1-2 shots daily). She no longer has health insurance, so she refuses to go to the doctor (and she thinks she knows more than the doctors, since "it's her body"). She is unemployed and living with our 80+ year old mother and 50 year old brother. She may test once or twice a day with a glucose meter. She has had a partial foot amputation, cataract surgery, and is currently losing her sight.
She is often depressed, has wild sugar swings, and eats poorly (typical meals include yogurt or a donut, french bread pizza, hot dog or microwave fettuccine alfredo). She gets little to no exercise.
This is very hard to watch. The entire family is tired of fighting with her. She is belligerent when her sugar is out of whack (usually) and she will lash out at everyone.
So I have two questions:
1. Is it possible to help her?
2. Are there any support groups out there for families of diabetics like this?
Thank you for any feedback you can provide.
