How to get enough fibre on low carb?

Really struggling to cut carbs but still get enough fibre (30g per day).

I have flaxseed but don’t fancy eating 100g every day of the stuff. I have psyllium and chia which are both vile but I can force a bit down if I have to.

A lot of things high in fibre (lentils, whole grains etc) are also high in carbs. Lots of people advising me to eat eggs and high fat foods, which is fine but they’re all low fibre.

Interested in advice from those who have found ways to get both low carb and high fibre. For me I have to do both somehow!

Many thanks

Just curious, why do you need 30g of fibre p/d

I get gut pain without enough fibre. I used to struggle with it for years and porridge with wheat bran every day has kept in under control. Now I can’t have oats looking for alternatives and eggs and cheese won’t do It :(

I found my ibs type symptoms totally disappeared when I turned to low carb.

On the odd occasion I feel I need more fibre I up my spoonfuls of seeds to 3 a day, but go back to just one once things are moving again.

Turns out a lot of my symptoms where grain related, now it's out of my life, so are the gut ups and downs ;)

Ground linseeds are nice. Linwood is a good brand. Chia seeds are much less disgusting when soaked in kefir or yoghurt or something first and then served with berries and cream. Psyllium is just plan vile, as you say, and the only way I can get it down is in capsule form. How low carb are you? I don’t eat grains or potatoes if I can help it, and avoid sugar, obviously, but find room for beans and lentils at least daily. If you’re keto, that no good, but if you’re just low carb you might manage it as long as you’re strict about avoiding the mainstream white carbs. Depends what you’re trying to achieve and how you personally respond to carbs, of course.

Thanks.

i think very low carb. Only thing I’ve eaten today is a small bowl of lentil soup and BG went up 5mmol and stayed there for 3 hours. Scared to eat anything else until tomorrow. Looks like lentils are off the menu.

I put psyllium husk powder in my breakfast of keto coconut ‘porridge’ every day, plus I often take psyllium capsules if I feel I’m lacking fibre. It’s a much more palatable way to take it.

@cantfindasuitablenamehere - Is your issue related to constipation at all?

For me, when I am troubled in that way, I up my fat levels and it improves.

I live a low carb lifestyle, but don't particularly monitor fibre levels.
It might have something to do with it, I just know I get pain (like colitis) if I don’t eat plenty of fibre.

I have diverticula disease and hubby (who isn’t diabetic but low carbs) has colloid colitis and IBS, everything has improved for both of us on a low carb diet. Hubby very occasionally has high carb foods and it usually triggers his gastro troubles, you may find if you go low carb you won’t need the amount of fibre. One of the keys is to drink plenty of water but keep in mind coffee and tea don’t count as they are diuretics

That's super helpful, thank you.

One thing I've discovered is portion size still matters, even for "good" veg.

Just had a steak dinner with broccoli and a small amount of sweet potato and three potatoes the size of cherries. Lots of mushrooms. Very good, we'll see what happens on the CGM!
