Hi,

To give you background of mine - I am 34 years age diagnosed as 'T2' in Dec-15th 2014 and straight away put on Metmorphin 1500 mg because my blood sugars are very high (HBA1C came 15.5% ). However - I never experienced any symptoms like weight loss, ...

The only symptoms I can see here are:-
a) My father was a diabetic
b) I m having daily head ache for almost a month
c) wound heal slowly

I lost 9 KG(s) and now my weight is 55KG(s) and also my waist size reduced to 28 from 30 earlier. My GP said clearly that I am Type-2 only however I have very strong feeling after reading many posts here if I am Type 1.5 or LADA. But, How do I confirm this ?

Thanks

Hopefully another Lada will be able to help and advise. you

Best wishes RRB

As Noblehead says a c-peptide test will show how much insulin you have and a GAD test may also confirm that you have GAD antibodies which can kill off beta cells. Don't accept your GP guessing the T2 like mine did and others on the forum have experienced. Your young age and weight loss are very strong pointers to LADA. I had the two tests done privately in the end and my c-peptide was very low which confirmed what I thought. BTW the latest NICE Diabetes Guidelines DEC 2014 now say that weight loss at diagnosis should be a pointer to the GP that T1 should be considered and that the GAD and c-peptide may not be needed and T1 assumed. Gliclazide is the preferred tablet rather than Metformin ref NICE (yes, my GP prescribed Met!) and I'm afraid if you are T1 insulin will eventually be needed but it's not a problem and does give complete control.

Hi,

Last week - When I had an appointment Nurse- I understood she may not be having a very good knowledge around which Type I am but she told me that GP confirmed Type-2 only and continue to use Metmorphin. If I book another appointment with GP - Can I request them to do C-Peptide test ?

Thanks.

Good advice from Daibell. I was also misdiagnosed for 2 years and ended up very sick indeed. You are young and by the sound of it reasonably slim. Therefore you should be tested now for the type 1 markers (i.e. GAD antibodies and a C-peptide test). Some people with slow onset type 1 (also known as LADA or type 1.5) may initially test negative. Best of luck.

Ask your GP how he was able to confirm T2; I guarantee he will not be able to give you a good answer. My GP guessed it with a urine stick and without even noticing I was thin. Many GPs have never heard of LADA and just label you T2 unless you end up in hospital with DKA.

Thanks all... I will book an appointment and will let you all know what she says.
