How urgent could this be?

Hey everyone,

I'm not diagnosed with diabetes so I understand I might be being a hypochondriac, so sorry if I'm wasting your time but I'd love some help.

Basically, these past few days I've just been so thirsty. It doesn't matter how many times I fill up a bottle of water, I'll drink it within a minute - it's unquenchable and it's getting worse. I'm so so hungry as well, and i've got a bit of diarrhoea probably because I'm eating so much. I start shaking if I drink a load of water as well, and today in particular I've been a bit out of it, and I woke up this morning with a banging headache, probably because I'm restricting myself from drinking. I'm sweating in the night and my bedsheets are left smelling like sweet vinegar, which is not my normal smell and it's gross. My mood's gone through the floor as well, I'm usually a pretty nice guy but recently I'm struggling not to insult everyone I see on the street lol. And I'm probably annoying my flatmates by spending so much time to and from the bathroom to pee all the water I'm putting in.

Anyway, I'm early 20s and very slim. I know not to diagnose before seeing a doctor but my question is as follows:
In the off-chance that I'm suddenly diabetic, how urgent should I be seeking help right now? My doctor's surgery would have to make me wait a week or more as they're very busy, but I feel myself deteriorating by the day, and I really don't know a lot about how this might progress if I am affected.

Again, I'm sorry if I'm just another internet hypochondriac, but I am a bit worried about what I should be doing.

Thank you

Hi welcome to the forum. :) I would try to book yourself in as an emergency. I really hope you are being a hypochondriac, but if you're not you need to get this sorted asap. I don't think you can afford to wait as long as a week. Let us know how you get on

It might be anything possibly including diabetes but none of know enough to diagnose it. Get an urgent appointment with your doctor. If you can't then the week you have to wait starts after the phone call. Do it first thing tomorrow.

You are not wasting our time and nobody knows our own bodies better than ourselves as others have said off to the Drs with you and please let us know how you get on

Good luck

You could try and get your blood sugar taken at a local pharmacy to check how that is or atleast give you something to go on when you phone the doctors for an emergency

That's a good idea.
whatever you deside best do something asap.

Yes, phone the doctors immediately and stress the need for an urgent appt.
Say you will turn up and wait for a cancellation, if necessary (that should impress on them that you are serious!)

Or are there any drop in centres near you? That would save the wait.

And, as @Danaemac says, pop along to your local pharmacy and ask at the counter for them to do you a finger prick blood glucose test.

Good luck, and please come back and let us know how you get on.

I'd get to A&E ...NOW.... I think you are in DKA with the smell of your sheets and how you feel.. it can be life threatening, ring an ambulance if you have no one to take you

I am with all of the above posters - to me this sounds kind of serious. Either go to an A&E or plant yourself firmly in your doctor's waiting room and don't leave before they have measured your blood glucose.

I am not a doctor, but to me your symptoms smack of a sudden onset of LADA (or late T1). If not taken hand of, it might be life threatening.

Please keep us posted.

Best, annelise

Hi there
I had a very sudden LADA onset and little support from surgery so I bought a meter and strips, measured BM twice a day Monday to Thursday and Friday morning and wrote all of the results down. Friday evening surgery I went to surgery asked to see a doctor and was assured in no uncertain style that it was impossible and the next appointment would be on Tuesday.
I gave them my results for the week asking that they give it a doctor as a matter of urgency advising that I will be in the waiting room.
In 8 minutes I was in the surgery sitting opposite a GP. Things started moving very quickly indeed I can assure you.
We need to be strong and very assured in how we manage our health, particularly with regard to something as life threatening as diabetes.
Thinking of you - good luck.

If you go to your GP's surgery and describe symptoms that could be DKA you will get an emergency appointment even if normal waiting times are longer.

Did you get in contact with your Dr yet?

@Bforeye Hello. Your last post was yesterday evening. How are you today? Have you been to a&e or the Doctors? I hope you will post soon so that we know you have had some help.:)

Heya,

Thanks for all of the responses everyone. I went to my GP today, she took a urine sample from me, spent ages looking at the colour chart looking for glucose levels, and said that it didn't indicate diabetes. But I do have a temperature and high blood pressure, so she took some blood from me and sent it off for testing.
So I guess I've just got some kind of virus that makes me unquenchably thirsty and smell different. Well, I'm sorry to have bothered you all, but thank you so much for the concern and the advice.

the vinegar is a common smell with ketones, it you haven't eaten for a day or two, that can give ketones too..a virus can explain the feeling sick
I'm pleased for you, this has turned out to be the best outcome... and you didn't need to be on an insulin drip in A&E/hospital for a couple of days :)
until you get your bloods back, if you get worse with throwing up and stomach cramps, I would still get an opinion from a dr or if out of hours, A&E

Good to hear from you!
Glad it is 'just' a virus - even if it doesn't feel that way, at the moment.
;)

So even though it wasn't diabetes, (thank goodness), you weren't being a hypochondriac after all, were you? So you did the right thing by asking advice.:) Thanks for letting us know, it's great to get feedback. I hope you're feeling better soon.:)
