Type 1 Hunger

So i have been having a weird feeling at the moment where when I manage to get my blood sugar down to a good range 5-7mmol/L I have been feeling really hungry. I was wondering could this be because I have only been diagnosed for the last month so it must be the first time in ages my body is feeling my blood sugar being lower than the highs it was pre diagnosis? If so will this hunger go away as my body gets used to being in a normal range?

Did you lose weight before diagnosis? Your endocrine system may wish to stock up again.
Also, a lower blood sugar may well make hunger more likely as there aren’t any strong signals being given that the excess sugars in your blood means that no food is required; it’s already there but you just lack the insulin key to open the cell and let it in.

I did lose a lot of weight before my diagnosis but I have put some back on again now. The not having any insulin does make sence but even after eating and taking insulin once my sugars have gone back down to around 6 it feels like im hungry again.

Hi. Are you controlling the carbs in your diet? You say you have gained weight which implies too many carbs? Carbs leave the body feeling hungry so do balance lower-carb with enough fats and proteins. Match your insulin to your carbs so you may need to reduce the insulin a bit in line with lower carbs.

Yeah i have been carb counting to match my doses with my insulin. Weight gain has been a increase in body fat and slight muscle gain because pre diagnosis i had literally lost all the weight on my body.

It’s a particularly difficult time to be regaining muscle rather than fat rather than too much fat, though I think we all need a bit of fat to store some extra supplies. Are there any ways you could get more exercise @Zaander? There’s nothing wrong with regaining what you lost before diagnosis, and exercise, even just lots of walking, could make you feel good too. You may find that you can only do short walks to begin with, after all your body’s recovering from a big assault that’s drained it.
Remember to take the hypo treatment and test kit with you, something easy to carry like glucotabs and/or jelly babies (in a small food bag so they’re not fluffy jelly babies - yuk!). It really does sound to me that your body’s just compelled to make good all that unasked for weight loss. When I was first diagnosed, aged 20, I’d lost a couple of stone (we weren’t decimal back then) and for the first few weeks I was ALWAYS hungry.

Yeah exercise wise I got a exercise bike fir hkme to try and get myself moving but still being close enough for comfort incase of a hypo. Just rather looking forwards to everything settling down as I get more into understanding and getting on with things.
Thank youu
