So does anybody else feel like they cant go for too long without eating or is it just me?
Does anybody else just not feel full after eating no matter how small or big the portion, or is it just me? Even if i feel full it will wear off pretty quickly hense the first question. Is anybody else the same?

I can't say I do, some medication such as antidepressants can make you more hungry than normal.

Most of us have felt like that at some point I think.

If you don't feel satisfied by a meal, it's not the quantity but the quality. In particular, modern convenience foods give a quick satisfying rush, usually by including large amounts of salt, sugar, fat etc that induces a craving for more. However, you can ween yourself off it but, you're either going to have to pay for top quality foods or be prepared to learn how to cook properly and, even then, you need time, and lots of it. On the plus side, if you do, you can take advantage of some very cheap foods, meats like shin beef or skirt steak or mega cheap things like pulses, lentils, chick peas etc and cook them with spices.

Another side benefit that I noticed is that when I felt hungry after a meal, I could start to plan and prepare the next one. I am never hungry when I am preparing stuff. But, it takes time and time is the one thing most people do not have and lack of time and convenience foods is the enemy for type 2s.

But there is a solution, a slow cooker! Get one for about £15 and a book of slow cook and one pot recipes.

I tried a neat trick someone told me. Put some chopped veg in the bottom of the slow cooker, celery, carrots, onions, leeks and then place a chicken on top. If you are worried, a little bit of water can be added. Turn it on low and then go to work.

When you get back, the chicken will simply fall off the bone. Use a stick blender to turn the veg into a soup - lots of liquid comes off the chicken - add in some big chunks of chicken and you have a healthy meal within ten mins of walking through the door. When you feel hungry while watching the TV later, there'll still be plenty of chicken left. Have some mushrooms handy, cook with garlic and chilli and a smidgin of oil. Better than any mushroom appetiser in a restaurant which will set you back a fiver. Mushroom soup, also a god send with a slow cooker.

They all taste nice and satisfy and you won't be left with a craving.

I am on no medication apart from my insulin obviously :) and wow yorksman you made that sound delicious! You definitely won me over on getting a slow cooker! I guess its just going to take some time as i am only young and have barely been 2 years diabetic. If you were to ask anybody i know what my favourite times of the day were they would say breakfast, lunch time and tea time, which would be agonisingly true.

I someone's feel really hungry and nothing will fill me if my bg is high. Even after a meal I can still eat another one if I'm running high.

For what its worth I've found one of the benefits of a low carb diet is that you don't get so hungry between meals

Yes, I agree. I used to be like you, always hungry. I used to eat bacon butties for breakfast for myself and my son. I was always starving hungry by 10.00am. One day I found I didn't have enough bread, so I gave the butties to my son and I had just (the same amount of) bacon. Amazingly I didn't even think of food until 1 pm....yet I had eaten less. Now I have 2 or 3 meals a day, with no snacking in-between. However, if I 'slip' and eat bread and potatoes I begin to get hungry again.

I agree with Yorksman, use good quality foods with plenty of taste.

I feel like that the whole time so I eat nuts and vegetables as a snack to fill me up, but to tell the truth it doesn't always get the job done

Well ive had a couple of low carb salads and the salads make it worse, id doesnt make me full and im still hungry almost immediately afterwards weird.

You're t1 aren't you so maybe you need a bit of help from other t1s with regard to insulin v food. However were you not t1, I'd say you need to eat more protein and fat with your salads, both stave off hunger pangs ;) Good luck!

Hello,
I never can do go long without eating in fact i am born for eating and once i eat meal then after sometime again i feel hunger...
Basically fasting is not me as well...

Hi!

I'm 1-month diagnosed type 1 and my bg is still higher than it should be. My nurse said that it's normal to keep feeling hungry, if you don't have enough insulin in your body. Your body can't process enough sugar for energy, which for healthy people means they need to eat more - so you feel hungry. With diabetes you may have enough food (so sugar) in your body, but not enough insulin - so your body can't process it and it "thinks" it's hungry.
I noticed that if I'm hungry and my gb is high all I need is to take some insulin - I don't even need to eat anything and I stop being hungry quite quick. Because my body is able to process the sugar I already have in my blood :)

I'm on moderate carbs, 120g or thereabouts, and I do have a couple of slices of Hovis Granary most days, plus the odd potato sometimes. The only time I am hungry is the hour before my main evening meal and I put that down to too much time since lunch. I have never snacked or eaten anything between meals. Hunger really is weird.

I could eat a big meal and still be hungry afterwards..i never get that full feeling. I've got to keep telling myself that i've eaten enough and no you cant have more Aoife :p i'm usually really really hungry when i am verging on a hypo and when i'm high i don't feel like eating atal.

A lot of people has said to snack on nut but i'm not a lover :meh:

I eat very healthily (at least that's my view ;)) but I am constantly hungry.

Breakfast two eggs on toast - hungry an hour later

Lunch - sardines on toast, an apple, abiscuit - hungry 90 mins later

Right now - if you got your arm too close you might lose it.

BG readings have been good all day.

I once read something on the internet which stated that the beta cells which do not produce insulin in diabetic patients also do not produce the hormone amylin. Amylin is the hormobe which makes us feel full. However, a diabetic patient will not produce this hormone and therefore will never feel full and get hungry more often. I don't know how accurate this statement is, i guess it's worth looking into :)
