husband needs to gain weight

Hi my husband has type 2 diabetes which is controlled with gliclazide. He has also been recently diagnosed with pancreatitis. His blood sugars are all over the place at the moment and is loosing weight. Any help or tips to gain some of the weight would be really really helpful please as we are at a loss of what to try. Some sites contradict each other about carbs etc

Hi. Weight loss can be a problem when the pancreas isn't producing enough insulin and hence carbs cannot be transformed into energy and/or stored; taking too many won't increase weight but will increase blood sugar. Apart from moving to insulin in the longer term, increasing fat intake is one way to enable the body to gain weight and energy. This may not be enough in which case insulin is needed. The Gliclazide will stimulate the remaining beta cells to produce more insulin but may not be ideal if pancreatitis is present and this needs to be monitored by the GP as I'm sure it is.

He probably needs to see a dietician. I know a gentleman also diagnosed, same as yours. He had diabetes team telling him one thing for diet, and the pancreatic consultant telling someting totally diffferent.
He got referred to a dietician who helped enormously..
Incidentally, he too had lost huge amount of weight.. And original advice on food from hcp's was barely enought to keep a sparrow alive...let aline put some weight back on.
He has successfully put on some weight now...

He has seen a dietician and she told him he was eating ok but its obvious he's not. Got to see his diabetic consultant again in 3 weeks so maybe he can help a little. And back to pancreatitis consultant in 5 weeks. Its very worrying when someone looses so much weight and finds it hard to regain it. Feels like we going around in circles for what to do.

Forgot to say... That because the chap I know needed to pile on weight he was actually put on insulin for a while so that he could eat substantially without having to battle with high levels. High levels can also cause weight loss so I know it was a battle for him initially. He went from diet to tablets to insulin.
I know it was a battle for him but when on insulin he put on weight. It was the dietician that intervened for him between two differing opinions on food from two differing consultants.

He was put on insulin when first diagnosed but the amounts he was on were minuscule plus his job is driving large plant vehicles. Luckily he was able to come off it after a month. He really does not want to go back onto insulin again because of his job. Its probably going to be a long uphill struggle but hopefully will get there
