Hello there. Just wondering if anyone has suffered symptoms of hypoglycemia other than the typical ones seen on websites ( excess thirst etc.)? My fasting blood sugars average around the 7 level. I normally limit the carbs I eat. This evening I had a small cheese/ mushroom croissant and a small latte-- -more carbs than normal but have eaten similar before with no symptoms. 2 1/2 hour later I started to feel shaky, my lips/ cheeks felt numb, legs felt weak and my brain felt "wuzzy". I assumed it was the onset of a hypo but my level was 10.0! I retested an hour later and it had increased to 12.2. I have been struggling for several weeks with bronchitis and have recently finished taking steroids/ antibiotics. I'm wondering if my symptoms were due to my raised blood sugars or the lingering affects of my virus. Has anyone else had similar feelings during high bs? Any thoughts much appreciated. Thanks.:)

Can't be sure really...seems a bit brutal for such as relatively small jump in blood sugar but it's certainly possible. To be honest, I would think that the combination of slightly elevated blood sugar, some carbs you may not be used to (though it's not so much), the cessation of anti-biotics and steroids added to the fact you are recovering from a period of ill health - is all enough to make anyone more than a bit light-headed. Had enough fluids? How long did you feel like this...and had the blood sugars then dropped ? One final little point - I would avoid steroids if at all possible...they will almost certainly spike the blood sugar, and the longer you take them the worse it will get. I am biased as steroids caused my diabetes. Hope all's well..and it was just a blip.

My experience seems to be that the steadier we have our bg normally, the more we feel it when it goes out of range.

Back in the day my bg used to swing much more wildly. Yes, I felt it, particularly the hypos. But now? I would feel it much more - because my body now knows what 'normal' is and it has relearned its comfort zone.

As for the symptoms... I think they are as varied as we are varied but yes, hypos and hypers may feel similar at times. Although some people don't seem to feel hypers at all.

Morning pleinster. Thanks for your early reply. I didn't retest as I went straight to bed. Had a disturbed night with chest twinges etc and my fasting level at 6.55am was 8.5. I was only on steroids for 6 days to help with chest inflammation and finished them a few days ago. The reason I mistook it for a hypo is that I take Gliclazide 80mg twice/ day and the symptoms were similar. I still feel a bit ropey this morning. Thanks again for your helpful thoughts. You are very kind.:)

Morning Brunneria. Thanks for replying and for your thoughts. I'm on Gliclizide 80 mg x 2 per day as well as Metformin and have experienced hypos in the past even shortly after eating which is why I mistook the symptoms and was surprised by my high levels. I no longer routinely test before/ after meals, only if I am trying something new but have not been aware of symptoms like this before. Serves me right for eating the carbs but I have had exactly the same before with no after effects at all. I was just interested as they were not the typical hyper symptoms we all read about. Thanks again.:)
