Hi all

I'm a type 1 of nearly 25 years, uncontrolled for most of that but relatively tight control for the last five years after having done DAFNE. Having been diabetic for so long I have dextrose in every room along with other hypo aids, but I woke up with a massive hypo this morning and it became clear these are not necessarily enough.

I use GlucoTabs, which I buy in pots of 50 and until now have kept them in the pots, but in my hypo state I couldn't open the pot (its a flexible plastic lid that flips up), and the same for the little bottles of glucose drink. I have an iPhone, and set up the finger print recognition so I could get into my phone when I don't have the dexterity to enter my pin code, but found that it wouldn't work because my hands were sweating, so I couldn't call for help. I was home alone with my five-month old daughter, and was terrified that I'd fall down the stairs or something, leaving her alone until my husband gets home tonight. I did eventually manage to get to another room and raid the Christmas sweets, but it took well over an hour to get there!

I need to avoid anything like this happening again, so was hoping that you might be able to suggest other options, 1) for what I can keep dextrose etc in which is easily accessible to me when hypo but sealed in some way to keep them away from baby when she's mobile, and 2) for raising the alarm to get help. My brother-in-law lives a few doors away and works from home, so help is generally available.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

For the dextrose I got some small ziploc bags from sainsburys and keep them loose in these as sometimes I have trouble with packets and lids but can pull these apart okay.

Hi. I just buy Dextrose tablets in packs which are very cheap. I keep some with me in a poly bag and packs around the house including beside the bed. The packs are easy to open. Glucose tablets wouldn't cause any harm if a child should eat them as they are just - glucose.
