Hypo query.

Hello,

I'm new here, I posted in the greetings and intros at first, and hope i'm in the right place to post this. Sorry if not.

Its an odd situation and I welcome and appreciate any information or advice anyone can offer. I tried searching but could not find any posts about this particular topic.

I had a blood test a couple of years ago and that said I was not Diabetic. I do have diabetes running in both sides of my family. The weird part is I am getting what I think are hypos on a daily basis now and I don't know what to do. I know this forum cant be used to get a diagnosis, I just really need some information as I have never heard of someone without diabetes getting hypo's. I don't get hyper's. Apart from once it was 10.

I only started testing recently because I noticed some weird symptoms, like feeling dizzy, light headed, out of it, shaky and extremely hungry. Its like I knew I had to get something to eat quick. When it gets really low I start sweating, and can't think or speak any sense. It can happen anytime even if i've eaten. It's becoming quite frightening. I don't think the Dr will test again, but I don't know what to do with the new information I have about my blood levels. I have passed out a couple times I don't know if due to this, but looking back it was how I've just described feeling. Its possible that was because levels were low.

Im not even 100% sure of what level is considered to be "hypo" in non diabteics I think below 4 or 5? possibly, I had one of 2.1 today, maybe that's not too low, i'm not sure. All I know is I felt very unwell and even though I have eaten now I still feel bad. My diet is pretty good and i'm not overweight, I just don't understand :(

Thank you so much in advance for any advice or information.

I'm not experienced enough to give as good a reply as many here, but my doc told me ideal levels are about 6. Anything over 11 is definately diabetic. How many years ago were you tested, 5 years ago my test was 5.6 but 4 weeks ago it was 12.4. So things change, and even if it isn't diabetes there is a problem that needs investigating so the doc is surely your next point of call? If you remain untreated and pass out in the wrong place it'll be A&E so the doc is preferable to that!

Hi,

Thank you for replying. I had one blood test where I didnt have to fast around 2-3 years ago.

Two hours after eating my levels are up to 4.2 which is good I think. You are right that is a big change and the dr's over A&E is much better. My Dr isnt very good though and I am searching for information about possible causes and tests that needs doing etc so I can be prepared when I visit the dr's. Its hard because there is so much information out there, its very confusing.

Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to answer me.

Hypo levels in a non-Diabetic are considered to be anything below 2.5 mmol/l.

In a Diabetic it is anything below 4 mmol/l.

Thank you, I was probably looking at values for diabetics. Thank you for the link, it explains it well and I suppose my levels arent very low if they are 2.1, so thats encouraging, i just feel really bad with it.

I have heard or maybe read that some people can be hypoglaecemic but not actually diabetic, all the classic symptoms of low sugar levels but again not diabetic :|

Hello,

Thank you. That's an interesting point, will have to and look up why that happens. I am going to brave the Dr but I know they wont do anything :(. I just am not sure why its happening to me and its becoming troublesome. I'm not even sure what tests I need.

Thanks.

Hypoglycaemia in a non-Diabetic can have several causes, before you check out this link be aware that you may scare yourself witless without cause ! It lists further down the page what causes OTHER than Diabetes which can cause Hypoglycaemia.

You did ask......... :|

http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Hypoglycae ... auses.aspx

You must get this checked out properly even if you have to ask for a referral if it is worrying you......

Hi,

Thank you, yes that is a little worrying :( But it's good to know. I can at least rule out 1, 2, 4, and 5. The others sound even more grim. I will go to the Dr for definate now. Thanks for posting the link.

Hope you do see your doctor as I know how horrible hypos are , had one today and they feel like death compared to years ago :(
It will be good making sure you know why low levels are happening.

Hi, thank you for posting. I am so sorry you had one today. I can't imagine how horrible they must be for you :(. I read the link above and it says under 2.5 for non diabtics is low, I was 2.1 the other day but im not sure thats really much lower, so maybe it wasnt really that low. Im hoping the dr will listen anyway, because something isnt right.

Take Care

Mine was only 3.1 today but the symptoms are feeling worse compared to thwn I was on Insulin. I'm not sure why a non-Diabetic would be dropping so low but hopefully it's a one off and not ths start of something else.

From the article I read that is low for a diabetic, i'm sorry you had one that low today :(

mine is usually around 2-3 range when i go low, its happening more and more regularly. I start feeling it around 3, and pretty bad at 2.1 the other day. But im not diabteic and its supposed to be <2.5 to feel it, so at 3 cant be that, its very confusing. Thankyou for your support.

Hi there, I have not myself been diagnosed with anything as yet (docs appt next week).I myself have had some strange symptoms of late, associated with low BG (anything below 4mmol and I start shaking) 3.3mmol and my legs nearly went from under me, I had a few swigs of Lucozade it was up to 7.8 in 15 minutes. The trouble is mine also goes as high as 13.8mmol.I really do think a reading of 2.1mmol is much too low even in a non diabetic.I am certainly no expert but I have been researching a lot due to my own symptoms and I would say you probably have some form of Hypoglycemia, try Googling it, there is lots of info.Have you been to the Docs?x
