Hypo treatment

Glucotabs, glucojuice, lucozade, or the entire kitchen, depending on hypo type...

Glucotabs normally with some GlucoJuice and Coke in reserve for any bad hypo's.

Hi Tim,
In the last months I was drinking lucozade every time I had a hypo, when I went to see my GP for the annual he said my blood pressure and hb1ac went up because I was drinking too much.

If you are treating hypos with a bottle at a time, then, yes, that would cause issues for glucose levels (although I'm not entirely clear about the blood pressure link given that there are many other possible causes for that). If you are using it in measured amounts then it's fine.

That's why the glucojuice is good - it comes in 15g of glucose portions, which is normally more than enough for me.

The other question to address is how many hypos are you having? If it's loads and quite major ones then you should probably look at your insulin doses.

I buy the Haribo mega party packs and one of the little bags inside normally sort out most Hypos, they are also easy to carry about.

Glucotabs - at 4g each you can fine tune your correction to the 'style' of hypo!

If you don't measure it, even roughly (I just measure swigs) then yes, you could overtreat a hypo. I use Lucozade at home when I need something quick as it works fastest, and then I carry Dextrose tablets when I'm out and about. I also use jelly babies or Haribo if I'm not too low.

If I was you, I'd ask your doctor or nurse to clarify the blood pressure comment. I drank Lucozade all during pregnancy (a time when high blood pressure can be extra bad) and my blood pressure stayed perfect and under the target range.

The only thing I can think is that he meant if you chose a flavour with caffeine in. Possibly too much caffeine could have an effect. I choose the orange Lucozade and have had no problems.
