Hi @ambercoco1

Forum rules don’t allow us to give advice on whether to take your medication or change dose etc. that is something you will need to discuss with your GP or nurse.

As you have discovered Gliclizide can cause hypos if you don’t eat enough carbs for you personally. You did the right thing to treat the hypo though 4 is considered just on the edge of hypo territory you could have gone lower.

Are you new to this medication? The advice in the leaflet is to take it 20 minutes before food, did you eat after taking it? If not this could be the reason for your hypo. You do need to eat after taking it

When I was on Gliclizide I found my sweet spot for the amount of carbs was 30g a meal, yours may be different either higher or lower. I did on occasion have a hypo but this was usually because I hadn’t eaten enough carbs.

I did eventually start to have more hypos as I lost weight etc and found I was “feeding” the hypos so with the support & help of my GP I eventually came of the Gliclizide by slowly reducing my carbs & medication. But I reiterate that I did this with full input from the doctor.

The trick is not to over treat the hypo so a couple of jelly babies for fast acting then test 15 minutes later and have some slow acting carbs like a cracker or a slice of bread, then test again after another 15 minutes just to make sure your BG have risen a little bit.

If you start to have more than the occasional hypo then contact your GP who can help you with either reducing your dose or suggesting something else

Yes you’ve a right to discuss your meds with your doctor and ask for a review of your meds, explain to them how your feeling and what’s happening and that you want to try by changing your diet, hopefully they’ll listen and be able to help you

What kind of foods are you eating at the moment? Do you know how many carbs you’re having per meal for example?
