Hypoglycaemia during pregnancy

Hi all, I was hoping to get a bit of reassurance/advice. I have reported this to the midwife so they are aware :)

I haven't been able to tolerate the glucose drink they use for the Glucose tolerance test, so the midwife has asked me to take my BM 4x a day. Once first thing in the morning as a fasting, then an hour after food.

I've been getting readings of below 4.0, even after eating. I've reported this to my hospital midwife this morning, she's unsure so is waiting on further guidance.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any idea why this would be? Is it a problem?

Thanks in advance :)

I do not have diabetes
First of all, I am a man and not yet been pregnant!
I cannot imagine how you are coping having hypos. Which I have had in bundles before I got a true diagnosis.
I have read extensively on my condition and it does mention that some pregnancies are a very similar symptoms and reactions to carbs, sugar and particularly glucose.
I have had five or six eOGTTs. Which is longer than a T2 or a usual pregnant diabetic.
That is two hours, an eOGTT is five hours because the hypo doesn't happen in the first two hours, but I have heard about some that do, in those that have had surgery, gastric bypass and the band.
My problem is I am carb intolerant, as well as lactose intolerant. And it is the reason why I have Hypoglycaemic episodes if I have carbs, so I don't!
I can only advise to see a specialist and get a different test, such as a mixed meal test or a fasting test. The only other thing is you have too much insulin circulating around the body. So an insulin levels test should be done. C-peptide and a G.A.D test.
I may be wrong, and it is something else.
So a referral is a good option.
My condition has its own sub forum, Reactive hypoglycaemia.
I have an abnormal hormonal response (insulin), and I spike very quickly, higher than normal. My pancreas has a secondary response which is too much, that drives my blood glucose levels down into hypoglycaemia.
Which causes a lot of health issues.

Keep safe

How low are you seeing on the monitor? Some people can get between 3.5-4 sometimes. I'm pregnant at the mo and had a 3.6 the other day. Are they constantly low? The monitor might be out abit as well. Did you retest ? From what I've heard hypos are not harmful to the baby so don't worry

I'll have a look at reactive hypoglycaemia! Thanks, I just found it bizarre how after eating my sugars seemed to be low. The midwife has said I should hopefully be able to speak to the specilist diabetes midwife tomorrow, so we shall see.

To be honest, I didn't recognise the signs of hypos. I've just been brushing it off as pregnancy stuff - nausea, vomiting, fatigue, headaches etc - very similar!

Thanks for the reply :)

Hi! Most of my results have been between 3.2 - 3.8, I've had the occasional 5.something. I've asked my partner to take a couple of tests too (I thought maybe it's the monitor too!), he gets "normal" levels.

That's been my main concern, tbh, I just want to do my absolute best for the baby. She's already small for gestational age, so I guess I'm quite anxious. Midwife has arranged for the specialist to contact me tomorrow, so trying not to worry *too* much!

Thanks for the reply! :)
