Just found out today and feeling all scared and excited at the same time. I was diagnosed last time at 28 weeks so have had some experience of being type 1 and pregnant but this time it is from day 1.(about 4 weeksish) Called my DSN this morning and by this evening I had a DSN/Midwife call me and organise for me to go in next tuesday for a meeting with the diabetes consultant and the paediatrician. So good response so far. Can anyone who has advice on being type 1 and pregnant post some advice to ease my panics

Congratulations!!!

Have a look in the Gestational forum to see if there is anything there that helps.

Hi congratulations,
I am so happy for you! My mum is type 1 has been since she was 20 she had me at 41! she always said just make sure you take it easy!
congrats!

Congratulations!!

A practical point - In the early days, it is easy to hypo and you can loose your warning signals, so make sure you do a bm very last thing and keep your monitor and snacks by the bed! Hypo's, if treated do not affect the baby, so don't panic about them, but treat them gently rather as going high is what can affect the baby's development. Come the 2nd and 3rd trimester, thats when your insulin requirements increase quite dramatically, so regular testing and altering of insulin requirements is required, but don't get panicky about it, it becomes second nature very quickly.

The key to a good pregnancy is good support, which it seems like your team is on the ball!!

Most importnantly though, enjoy!

Thanks all, Hypo's in the night made me wonder if I was pregnant as I have had 2 in the last 2 weeks, last time I used to hypo regularly in the night. I am really excited as we have been trying for over 6 months, just need to get in to see the 'team' and find out the grand plan!

Google Lois Jovanovic. She's a doctor in California whio specialises in caring for diabetic mothers. she's one herself and granddaughter of one of the first patients to be treated with insulin, by Dr. Best himself. Her mother was a T1 too. She writes very well.

Is it yours?

Only joking  , CONGRATULATIONS, and I hope all goes well for you.

Congratulations!!! I have been type 1 since I was 4 years old, and so had both my children whilst pregnant. The advice already given, summed up really well what I wanted to say!
I tried my absolute best while pregnat to control my diabetes...which meant, fo me, quite a few hypos. Losing warning signals is scary.
DO NOT GET IN THE CAR AND DRIVE WITHOUT TESTING!!!!! this is always important, but more so than ever now! You will be spending many hours waiting in waiting rooms ove the next 9 months, as there are lots of hospital appointments. Try not to get scared....they often feel like they have to frighten people into taking good care of themselves..which made me paranoid. Diabetic pregnancy isn't easy, but I certainly enjoyed mine and have 2 healthy children to show for it.

Please feel free to pm me, if you would like to "chat" with someone who has been there,Take care

Congratulations!

While you are going to all your appointments you will need some good books to read.

Be very careful about what the names of the main characters are. Should you get "Dad" to screen them for you? You could be unduly influenced under your hormone haze and name the baby Heathcliff or Pricilla Queen of the Desert or something even worse.

Am at the clinic tomorrow so shall see how that goes, supposed to have a 9 and 9.30 appointment but we shall see if the docs turn up on time, that would be a first. I am sure I will be in touch over the next few months for advice and I will have a look at the topics already posted. This past week my BS has been really good but then so have I. I have not pushed the boundaries at all, as I think last time the doc wanted BS between 4-6 at all tests and that was quite hard. I have a better understanding of it all this time but we shall see. Thanks for all your lovely ( and the odd cheeky) message, will be good to be in touch with like minded people this time.
