I have lost 3 stone and I am back to 8 and a half stone, I have not been feeling well for the past 2 days. I've been doing my insulin as usual, and correction doses, I don't do carb-counting yet but will probably talk about it when I go to the hospital in May.

I have had decreased appetite, rapid heartbeat, unintentional weight loss. I am on tablets at the moment, (Flucloxacillin). Doctor didn't say if this causes high blood sugar or high ketones.

My diabetes nurse has not replied for 4 days, I have just emailed her again. I have no other way of talking to them as I have extreme anxiety about talking on the phone. I don't know what else to do. I have been drinking water and tea to see if that helps. I haven't got a fever.

I look pale and gaunt. I am getting worried and scared about this.

I hope its nothing to do with my insulin because as soon as I take that I do feel ill. I know you can become insulin resistant but I don't want that if it is making me this ill. I thought a good nights sleep would sort it but it didn't do any good.

I don't even think I have any real symptoms cause its just generally not feeling well. Please help.

My blood glucose is 19.6 and ketones are 3.2. I have took correction for both. But as I say I am on tablets which could be causing it to be high or its because of my weight and how I feel ill.

Please don't judge me for my high blood glucose, as I have said about the tablets.

I have added a photo to prove I am doing insulin!!!

If the tablets are for an infection your sugars may read high as your body fights the infection. Read the leaflet with the tabs to see if blood sugar effect is mentioned.
If levels are at 19 you need a cautiously higher correction while you deal with this. Also, you need to start carb counting to know how to dose correctly.
Hope you feel better and the weight improves soon.

Can not start carb counting until I go on the DAFNE program thing. Which I don't know if I want to do it yet.

Who told you that? How are you deciding how much insulin to take with each meal at the moment?

No one here will judge you for having high blood sugars @Alex_B, it happens to us all.

You really need to get those ketone levels down, with high BG and ketones you run the risk of DKA which can be very dangerous.

The presence of ketones and high sugars would suggest that you simply don't have enough insulin on board.

Are you aware of sick day rules? Have a look at the flowchart I've attached for you.

Can you get someone to call your DSN for you? It's likely that the email you sent is sat in a cluttered inbox underneath mountains of unimportant emails... I'd try and get someone to call on your behalf ASAP.

My mum has gone to work, but I told her if I dont get a reply then ring the diabetes out of hours when she gets home to get some advice.

My diabetes nurse told me that I need to go on the DAFNE program and to be honest, I would rather listen to her (a professional) than people on here about carb-counting. Like I said I don't know if I am doing it yet.

Fair enough @Alex_B. Dafne will be useful.

Hope you get a response soon and the numbers come down.

Having an infection causes your blood sugars to go up. I have been on numerous courses now to treat pleurisy and stopped the last one a few weeks ago and i am still juggling to get back to normal.I understand you want to wait for your carb counting course but have a look when you want to eat something on the wrapper or tin. It will tell you how much carb is in a portion or 100 gr.

Has your nurse given you any info on carb counting herself? My DSN started me off with it and some ratios - I haven't been on DAFNE yet. Ask if you can get some basics from her.

I hope you get a response today and some assistance to get those numbers reduced.

She has spoke to me about it after I was diagnosed, but I was a bit wary on it. I don't understand it, but I will ask her about it when I next see her.

You don't need a DAFNE/DIANE course to learn the necessary basics of carb counting @Alex_B. Of course it will benefit you, but I'd be learning as much as I can in the interim, as not being able to count carbohydrates when a T1D is a real recipe for disaster.

As you seem to have ready access to the Internet, I'd register with this site and do their learning modules. It's actually quite good (I did mine yesterday) and funnily enough it covers carb counting and dealing with ketones... So you will definitely benefit from it:

https://www.bertieonline.org.uk

There's numerous websites online regarding how to carb count, here's one as an example. It'll do you no harm having a quick read through:

Hi @Alex_B I agree with @GrantGam - look at the Bertie site, it's incredibly useful to get your head round carb counting. Although DAFNE is great as it covers everything, it's also a good course to meet other type 1's, you would benefit from also getting hands on help with your insulin doses during the course too as they can review your doses and get you on track, so the benefits are lots.

I know you don't want to call but if you can get someone to speak to your DSN on your behalf today that would be the best idea before the bank holiday weekend, hope you get some help on this today :)

Hi. My DN explained carb-counting when she started me on insulin - easy-peasy and I don't know why the NHS make such a big deal of it. Most of us are started like me on 1unit of fast insulin (Bolus) to 10gm of carb. If you are worried about taking too much insulin you can always start with a lower dose and see how you go with the meter and over a few days tweak the ratio as needed.
