I dont understand my results

Type of diabetes
Type 2
Treatment type
Diet only
I've been 'officially' diagnosed... They didnt say a type? We're assuming t2, but there's a chance I've had it since I was a child, and I've been told both, and Im not really sure WHAT to go by...

But, I dont understand my results?

My results sheet from Dec 6th says; Hemoglobin A1c - 0.118 (h)

But the numbers under for the guides are the numbers we use to test out blood sugar here, (Under 6.0 = non diabetic, and whatnot) So I dont have a guide to go by. (Not sure if its needed but my blood sugar was 19.1, and this was marked as 13 hour fast test)

Would someone be able to simplify what I should be aiming for? Im not good at understanding a lot, and everythings really complicated and contradicting from what Ive read.

I also have ketones in my urine; 3,9 (a) is what it says.
Does that mean I was in ketosis?

You sure you HbA1c isn't 118? 0.118 is so low you wouldn't be alive to post!
The range is 21 upwards
21-41 is non- diabetic
42-48 is termed pre diabetes and 49 upwards diabetic. HbA1c is a different measure to a Fasting Figure, which is a recording of that very moment. In that case you are right, a fasting figure target id 4 to 6.0. so 19.1 is indeed very high

you really did not have it from childhood. diabetes does not work like that. if you were an untreated type 1 you would be either dead or very very sick. it more likely that your hba1c is 118 at that level you should be having active treatment. you needed to go back and get sorted.

Hi tk
I would assume your HbA1c was 118, and that (h) denotes high.
Sounds like you're saying that a fasting blood glucose test was 19.1 which is definitely high.
Your ketones suggest/confirm (if the above assumptions are true) that your raging high blood sugars are edging towards Diabetic Ketoacidosis (NOT dietary ketones). I suspect (a) means abnormal.
An HbA1c equates to an average blood sugar level of 17.9, which is unacceptably high.

Are you feeling terrible ?
What are the next steps your GP has proposed ?

Hope this helps...an HbA1c of 118 would equate to an average blood sugar level in mmols (ie. like your one off meter readings) over the preceding 3 month period. That is high...but addressing it with the right approach will bring that right down if you are determined. Good luck.50shades - Copy.png

My blood sugar has read 20+ since I was at least 15 years old. The highest it was was 25.

I am doing diet alone for treatment. My sugars are down to 10-12 now. Which was a reading I took yesterday after eating.
I feel fine, and I always have. The only issue I ever had was a constant yeast/sugar rash. And, to be fair, they never found out the cause of it; it may have been celiac related as I have that as well. My liver is fine, as are my eyes and the doc hasnt pointed anything out to worry about except the sugars and red blood cell count. I guess Im lucky 'since it's been over 10 years untreated?

I think you
Just a wild guess, but maybe it's supposed to be 11.8%?
I think you're right. On my A1C lab reports it will say something like 0.105 and we're supposed to multiply it by 100 which makes it 10.5%

If it helps, Im canadian?

11.8 would make more sense. I will be getting another test in March, so I'll be seeing the doc mid March and will have another reading then, and I can ask her what it's supposed to be, but I figured asking here would get a quicker response, thanks.

How I'd love to see an international standard adopted ... I understand the numbers but many don't, especially those new to diabetes

I'm in Alberta and I've never seen my HbA1c results like yours. Here they give the result as %.

I'm Canadian, too. I've gotten results like your and was told to multiple by 100. It's 11.8%.

if youve been in the 20s since child hood why were you not treated. if you were in the 20s since childhood you would be suffering serious complications. you need to be seen by a consultant urgently. if ketones are making an appearance your health is in serious risk and it requires urgent care. either get to your doctor tomorrow or your hospital im very serious.

I grew up in a very abusive household and then was in an abusive relationship where I was not allowed to leave the house. I was rarely brought to a doctor, and then wasnt able to go once I was in that relationship. It's been about a year and a half/two years since that and I have been to my doctor regularly and she is monitoring me and did not mention anything to watch except the sugars. Everything else comes back fine on the tests, except the sugars and the red blood cells are .2 points higher than the acceptable range. (Which she mentioned to me)

The urine ketones say 3.9 (a) - neg. And she didnt mention them at all.

unless your on a very low carb diet that and a raised bg is very worrying. im sorry about the abuse but how do you know your bg if you never saw a doctor. im worried if you did have bg in the 20s for so long you will have suffered damage. have you had your eye tests and full blood work up. your doctor can be as chilled as she wants but you need to be seen by a diabetic specialist with some urgency.

"I was rarely brought to a doctor," Key word being rarely, not never. The tests were only ever followed up once, by a dietician who told me to eat fruit and brown carbs... /:
I was tested at 15 at a hospital and they didnt mention anything to me, and then again by different doctors a few times between 18-20. I also took a sugar test where I drank this disgusting orange liquid.
Every time it was tested, it was high, obviously I cant say if it was a CONSTANT because it wasnt monitored. I have had full blood work done, full eyes done, multiple liver tests, xrays for joints, nothing come back out of wack except the high sugars. The only issue, like I mentioned before, which may not have been sugars but my celiac/other allergies, was a rash in damp areas on my body. This is all recent. I see an eye doctor for free yearly, and I dont even need glasses regularly, just for reading/computer. There were no issues.

My testing yesterday (3 times) was 12.6 right when I got up, 11.6 a while after I ate lunch, and 10 after I ate supper/snack.
Ive been LC since Jan 1st. (not super strict, Im probably doing 50g a day maybe, Im not counting, so I could be lower)
