Hi all,

I'm trying to understand what being diabetic means for me. I have a few days of readings that seem to be all over the place. When I was soot laws I ha no help or advice from my GP. He just said eat a health diet and there is no need to test at home. I have never had any follow up blood teat from my GP.

I bought myself a meter a few days ago as I was experiencing sysmptoms of hypo / hyper. I'm unsure what symptoms relate to what state and I have no idea if I should be concerned about my results.
I'm 3 months pregnant and very worried that I'm harming the baby. I have an appt with a diabetic specialist midwife on Wednesday so will ask her to help me. She did mention something about starting a treatment but I dont know what that would be.

Please see below my readings. Any help or advice would be great.

I test 7 times a day. First is out of bed, then its 60mins after breakfast, before lunch, 60 mins after lunch, before dinner, 60 mins after dinner, and lastly before bed.

Day 1 3.2, 9.7, 10.2, 10.6, 8.6, 10.8, 7.8
Day 2 8.2, 9.8, 10.4, 10.7, 3.1, 10.2, 7.3
Day 3 3.3, 7.5, 10.7, 12.5, 9.2, 11.3, 7.6
Day 4 2.9, 6.7, 8.5, 10.6, 9.7, 12.3, 11.6
Day 5 3.9, 6.2, 8.7, 10.2, 9.6, 10.9, 12.6

Hope you can shed some light. Thanks in advance.

Hi...

I'm not an expert in diabetes t2 or pregnancy...however yes, your levels are fluctuating....and the majority of them seem to be going high during the days.....

Your diabetic midwife should certainly be able to help you with these...I'm not sure what advice she will give....

Your levels during the day do need to be lowered, but I really do not know what impact your levels could be having on baby-howver your HCP whould be able to put your mind at rest with this, and be able to offer assistance to stabilise your levels.

Please do not panic...I would change at the moment just one thing...try changing your blood tests to 2 hours after you test....this is the standard to which HCP's work to.

Firstly don't panic,

Secondly keep testing, but as well note down the foods that you are eating (with amounts) if you'll not already doing so, this will help you diabetic midwife decide which way forward is best..

You will be very well monitored by your diabetic midwife throughout your pregnancy, it is very likely that at some point during your preganany that they will introduce treatment as your needs will change throughout the pregnancy, and it is likely that they will decide to induce you early, they don't like diabetics going full time induction is normally about a fortnight early, but they will up your anit-natal nearer to the end of your pregnany to monitor you very closely to determine the best time for baby to be induced..

Treatments that are available during pregnancy..

Diet, they may look at your diet and advise changes in this that will help in control..

Oral medication, they might introduce metformin to lower and stablise your blood glucose

Insulin treatment, they may decided to introduce this at any stage if you are struggling with control.

But your diabetic midwife will give you more information on Wednesday about monitoring, treatments etc... And also have you go through your pregnancy explaining and discussing your options etc..

Hi,
I have just had a baby, shes 10 weeks I am a type two diabetic but when I was around 7 weeks realised my bs was creeping, I knew it couldnt be diet as I was eating so little. My gp was a waste of space and had not made refferals to anyone and my first midwife app was when I 6 weeks!!! and no one had booked a 12 week scan either.
I refferd myself to the diabetic centre at the hospital and was told to check my blood sugers 3 times a day two hours after meals and stick to a general diabetic diet (lowish carb 160g a a day)
after a week i was started on insulin. In pregnancy because of the influx of hormones your blood sugers will rise no matter what you do and what you eat. I was like you so afraid and panniking that I would harm my baby. I satrted off with a HBA1C 7.9 kept a good diet honestly did not do much excercise as I had spd increased my insulin regurliy and at 38weeks my HBA1c was 5.1 and 6lbs baby and she had normal blood sugers.
I found you have to take onus of yourself and baby my gp and midwife did not care nor understand. I spoke on the phone to the diabetic nurse specialist once a week to discuss readings and insulin levels and then saw my mw and diabetic team and consultand every 4 weeks I made the app so I would see a proffesional every 10 days ish. Instead of seeing them all in the same week and not seeing anyone for weeks. You have to have retinal screen done in every trimester during pregnancy, I also had a fetal cardiac scan done for baby to check for abnormalities. from 30 weeks I would see the diabetic team and obs consultant every fortnight and a sizing scan to check weight of baby and then started planning c/section.
My blood suger range set by the diabetic team was under 7.8mmols two hours after meals, and no more than 10 higher out of range readings, but also no more than 3 hypos. Tight blood suger controls is essential to avert complications but this is no easy feat it is a lot of trial and error, you need to find good support ...........in my experience GP's are absolute idiots when it comes to diabetes especially in pregnancy. Your blood sugers are irratic but this is normal in pregnancy and the diabetic team with the use of insulin can help bring thease down, lots and lots of diabetic women have healthy babys, I always found that being upset or stressed sent my blood suger high!!
I started of using 4 units of nova rapid with breakfast and fininshed my pregnancy using 50u nova rapid 3 times a a day and 20u insultard, I was put on asprin 75mg during my pregnancy apperently its the new nice guidelines so check about that.
Sorry bit of a long rant (spellings bad due to sleep depravation :) ) but relax and enjoy your pregnancy, if You need to ask any more questions pm me. good luck

Looks like the post before me is the expert on the subject. All I can add is that my sister had diabetes during pregnancy and to honest isn't the sort to live a healthy life (she runs a pub) however, she has a fine healthy girl with no problems at all.

Hi Rosieposie,
It must all be quite frustrating and anxious for you. I cant add anything much to what has been said. Pregnancy is a special time so I hope things settle down and you get the reassurances and care you need. Keep looking for the answers and looking after your self. There will be others who have shared your experience and people who do know how to help. Stay positive and think positive. best wishes to you.
Sparkles.
